being a member of the wolfweb has already been used against people and its just gonna get worse as tww gets more negative media without anyone speaking out in a positive manner

TWW has the power to do great things, but usually we just get negative press for something stupid that someone here has said or done. Racism, for one, is terrible -- and instead of excusing it by saying "ohh its just the internet, all people act that way on the internet", why not make an effort to change the way outsiders think of TWW.

Hell, I wouldnt be surprised if Jake says "fuck it" and just decides to pull the plug. Not only is running TWW a thankless job and a money pit, the public expects him and Joe to defend the actions of the idiot users on this site EVERY TIME the media catches wind of some dumb shit that happens here.

if we're gonna tolerate all the hate, we should at least make an effort to do things to HELP the community. have a place for depressed people to go so they have someone to talk to... i could talk to people who want to enter drug treatment but dont know where to start, anything positive... i don't know, i'm just brainstorming. but TWW doesnt have to have this terrible image.

I'm not sure what I can do, but I'd like to help. As much of a shithole tww tends to be, this place is still the first message board I've ever been on. Everything I've ever needed to know about proper message forum protocol and etiquette, I learned here. As stupid as it sounds, this place has become my home. And even though I've met nearly none of you irl, you have become a part of my home.

I have to wonder how much longer CrazyJ will keep this place is going. jackleg is right, his is a thankless and vastly unappreciated job. And combined with the recent self-smearibg of this place's reputation, I wouldn't blame him for shedding such a useless burden.

I'm sure I could just as easily move to some other non-moderated forum. But the problem with that is that it wouldn't be the wolf web. I know how much you guys hate to be patronized/lectured and I know that even more of you hate having to read lots of words, but whether or not you read anything I have to say, you cannot deny this simple fact; there is only one tww. You can make parodies or copies of this place all you want, you can make as many places that are just like this one, but this one is ours. It is ours and no one else's. And if we don't take better care of it, it will disappear that much quicker. I don't expect this place to last indefinitely, but when it finally does I'd rather say that it was a nice forum and that I'll miss it instead of saying that it sucked ass and that its death was the best thing going for it.

Most of you probably won't even read this. The few that do probably won't care. But know this; it's exactly that same sort of apathy that is sapping this place of its life.

jackleg is right on target with his post. TWW could do things to clean up its image. I think Old School is one of the best things that has happened on here in a while. It gives people that have been here a while a way to communicate with each other and share advice about many of the things people have to do as they get older, like buying a home, grad school, etc. Kudos to CrazyJ and Joe for that idea, even though it has been active for a while.

people have said things out of line since the creation of speech...this is nothing new - most of the people that made the posts/threads that were viewed as racist are suspended and were almost immediately after it happened

clearly the solution here is to bitch, whine, moan and please keep all of your hands inside the vehicle until the ride comes to a complete stop

I agree with this entirely. If you don't like how we do things here, you're more than welcome to leave. It really pisses me off when people feel the need to announce to the world that they're quitting. If you're going, then go! Nobody cares that you're leaving, so don't bother saying goodbye. By making that goodbye thread, you're obviously just looking for attention and will probably be viewing the board after you "leave" to see if anybody said anything about you. After which you'll most likely wind up re-joining again.

However, that is not to say that tww couldn't improve as of right now. If we allow people to sufficiently kill off this place's reputation, then nobody new will join. And eventually the people already here will get tired of it and leave. After enough time has elapsed, nobody will be here, and this place will truly be dead.

There is a line between freedom of speech/expression and censorship, and everyone has to decide how fine that line is and where to draw it. tww has decided to forgo censorship for the most part. But this isn't meshing well with the rest of society, which has decided to draw the line at blatant racism and threats to people's lives. I wish I could say "who cares what the rest of the world thinks," but that's not very realistic. We're a public forum, which means all of our dirty laundry is on open display for the rest of the world to see, should they care enough to stop in and look. They simply doesn't understand the culture on here, so they're grossly offended by things on here that we don't even bat an eye at anymore.

If I had to guess, I'd say that most people on here only say racist stuff for the sake of being able to say something of shock value. And pretty much all threats on here are empty threats. But again, we're a public forum, and people who aren't regularly a part of t-dub don't really get it. They take it seriously, and unfortunately for us the public opinion matters. So when those people said the racist things that they said, that got what they deserved in the public eye.

But I'll say this much; I don't really care whether or not somebody is racist in their thoughts. What matters is their actions. You don't like white people? No skin off of my nose. But if you threaten to kill my ass because I'm white, expect to hear the police pulling up to your house. I don't think that you should be forced to love everybody simply because they're different, but regardless of whether or not you think black people are somehow sub-human, you shouldn't go around lynching them. Tolerance != having no racist thoughts, it just means leaving people alone and respecting that they do their own thing. And to an extent that's how we do things here; racist posts are shaken off, but pm's and stuff that promise violence or stalking are treated seriously.

back to my days as moderator, i did that, but certain mods went behind my back and reinstated the people who spread the hate across TWW.

and i dont think most people want to see tww get shut down. i know it wouldn't make me cry if it happened (especially now that i dont live within 5 miles of 75% of the users). but over the past 6 or 7 or whatever years, tww has been THE place where most of us come to read funny stuff from the internet, or sell stuff when we move to make a quick buck, or where some people come to find dates or whatever. we all have our reasons for being here... but unlike what someone said in this thread, i dont think it SHOULD be shut down, it's just that after all the bullshit that has come from TWW, i can see it coming to a point where it's not worth it for jake to run it anymore.

(and jake, if you do get to that point, contact me, i will GLADLY buy it and keep it going)

the only time i've ever seen TWW take an active stand against racism was in the month following 9/11/01 when you could get suspended in a heartbeat for cracking an arab-american joke.
