Too bad I didn't have one in High School, then again, I don't think I knew anyone that had it either.

When I was 16 and started driving in 1998.

On a side note, my first car was a Jeep Grand Cherokee that my dad bought from his filthy rich brother. They were so rich and ostentatious that they had a car phone. It was bolted into the console and was as big as Zack Morris' cordless phone.

I want one only for emergencies. Is prepaid the best way to go, or just one with very low monthly minutes?

i swore id never ever get a cell phone. i hated them, and anyone who used one in public.

then we moved to seattle in 2003 and got dicked around by Qwest on installing the local phone service. so we said fuck landline and got two cellphones.

will never ever get a landline again. cant imagine how i ever got along without a cellphone. i especially love to receive phone calls in a crowded movie theater.

I had a damn bagphone dad gave me when I started driving at 16. That was in 98. It was his old work one, and he got a flip phone just like the one pictured above.

I think a lot depends on the age of the person/context they were in when they got the cell.

I would say most people got there's at the point when they got a car, were a senior in hs, or started college.

96-98 were those points were having a cell was like omg when you were a kid. 98-2001 it got a bit cheaper and most adults got one; after that it became really affordable, now I see 12 yr olds with them.

that's me too!

i got one in november 2004 at the age of

28 years less 4 months

later than anybody i know.

i am a school teacher, and i see kids who are 10-12 with their own top of the line expensive cell-phones, and it sickens me. (most get a phone around that age) and the worst thing is, these horrible parents buy their children a new phone every year or so, just to have the latest model with all the features. some of the 13 year olds carry around $300 phones, and some of the 16 year olds carry around $500 phones

these parents should have been sterilized a long time ago. they are never there for their children, and they think buying their kids the latest phones will make up for their absence and neglect. of course, at the end of the year, when they get bad grades, the parents are on the scene straight away, demanding to know why their kids did bad. DUH YOU FUCKING SHAMELESS IDIOTS, IT IS BECAUSE, THEY NEVER STUDY AND ARE BUSY BLUETOOTHING AND EXCHANGING PHONES AND CHIPS, INSIDE AND OUTSIDE OF SCHOOL.

i still have the same one that i got more than 2 years ago, and it was actually a hand-me-down from my sister because she didn't need one anymore.

it is a basic phone: siemens A55. no color, no camera, no fancy tones, no nothing, just a PHONE.

^ you know, i dont buy fancy models or anything and my last phone i had for 5 years, but talk about bad generalizations. i wasnt aware that only dirt poor kids and nerds had parents who cared or did well in school. theres no difference between expensive clothes and expensive phones, it is just another status symbol. as far as being distracted in class, theres plenty of other ways to do that as well.

I got my first phone when I was 20 (December 2000) just before I started my first co-op rotation.

I don't want a cell phone anymore, but i feel like I need it for emergencies.

ill gladly do so when you stop making whiney rants about kids getting expensive toys and not wanting to pay attention. GASP, THIS TYPE OF THING ONLY HAPPENS IN YOUR NECK OF THE WOODS.

explain to me how he is being ignorant and ethnocentric.

all he is saying is that your rant makes you sound like you're a disgruntled whiner...

which may or may not be true.

some kids are spoiled beyond belief, we all know this.

thinking people are ultra-materialistic may be quite american, but thinking kids love to pay attention in school and dont want all the hot new stuff is just naiive.

I said I'd never get a cell phone, but after missing an important call from my boss...I was kicking myself for not having one.

Soon thereafter...in July/August 2004...I got hooked up.
