The ACC is still easily the best conference top to bottom. The problem has been the ability of those teams at the top to step up and consistently play like a high-level team. 3/18/2007 1:44:28 PM |

The ACC is undefeated in the NIT's aren't they?
The ACC is the best 'mediocre' conference in the nation. We have a lot of really good middle-tier teams that can beat anyone. Problem is, unlike years past, we don't have 2-3 elite teams. UNC is the only team that fits that bill and the verdict is still out on them due to thier streakiness 3/18/2007 1:51:39 PM |

^^^As far as overall average,yes
That said, since expansion the ACC hasn't been that great.
I guess the recent demise of Duke and Maryland haven't helped, but not so many years ago it wasn't odd for the ACC to have 2-3 teams in the Elite 8 every year. We're far from that now

The ACC is the best conference this year, but instead of having 2-3 elite teams it had 5-6 "very good" teams and one elite team. These very good teams, and even UNC the elite team are vulnerable in one-shot tournaments. 3/18/2007 2:02:10 PM |

It's probably the result of the NBA draft. I know all schools are hit by it, but the ACC always seems to get it the worse. Most of the elite teams are young.... but it seems like I've been saying that for years now3/18/2007 2:04:36 PM |

weird that the one supposed "elite team" finished with the same record as another "very good" team, and only 1 game ahead of some of these other "very good" teams. 3/18/2007 2:05:25 PM |

The ACC was pretty mediocre this year. Usually we have 2-3 top 10 teams and 4-6 teams in that 20-40 rangle. This year we had 1 top 10 team and 7 in that 20-40 range. Still, ACC was easily the best conference this year.
That said, Kansas ftw in this tourney. 3/18/2007 4:11:36 PM |

I think this is one reason Duke are always good. Experience. All of their players stay four years just about. The only case of leaving early from Duke I can think of are Brand and Maggette.3/18/2007 4:31:25 PM |

Deng, Livingston, Shavlik
And to a lesser extent, I think they were counting on ASU transfer Eric Boateng.

Shav would be gone by now though. Livingston and Deng would be around..
How about a UNC-UConn Championship game this year.
UConn would have Gay, Andrew Bynum, Villanueva, Boone, and Marcus Williams..
UNC would have Marvin Williams and J.R. Smith in addition to all their crazy talent..
** Avery and Magette were pretty much not welcome back anyway in Durham. Had Magette kept playing they would have to vacate every game he played in for Duke..

Switch out 6 non-conference games with conference games, then round robin against everyone will make the conference alot better. But since I doubt they'd want 22 games:

I use to believe this...but we've been pretty mediocre for the past couple of years. Maybe this is the sign for a permanent decline for the ACC???3/18/2007 9:10:21 PM |

As long as the ACC is the benchmark, it is the best conference year in and year out. Notice debate on the best conference always starts with "Who is the best conference this year, the ACC or ____?"
The elite teams for each conference are a bit up and down every year (this year the ACC is lacking multiple "elite" teams), but the ACC consistently has the best bottom half of any conference year after year. Is there any other conference where the bottom three teams have a legit shot at beating anyone in the country? 3/18/2007 9:19:18 PM |
