Quote :
"ATLANTA -- In a move that figures to have significant ramifications for the incumbent starters from both teams, the Atlanta Falcons on Wednesday agreed to in principle to trade three-year veteran quarterback Matt Schaub to the Houston Texans.

Most of the details of the trade, in which the Falcons are expected to receive a second-round draft choice, and possibly other considerations, have been agreed upon. The deal likely will be completed later Wednesday afternoon.

Sources told ESPN.com that the trade is contingent upon the Texans reaching agreement with Schaub on a contract, and negotiations have already begun.

In acquiring Schaub, the Texans have ostensibly conceded that five-year veteran David Carr, the top overall player chosen in the 2002 draft and a quarterback in whom Houston has invested considerable time and money, is no longer their quarterback of the future. At the same time, the departure of Schaub indicates that new Falcons coach Bobby Petrino is sold on Michael Vick, who is said to have made a strong impression on the rookie sideline boss in their first few months working together.

Schaub, 25, has been the subject of trade rumors for each of the past two springs. ESPN.com reported last Friday in the "Tip Sheet" column that Falcons officials seemed prepared to begin listening to trade offers for him, and had begun discussing possible replacements.

One of the strong candidates to replace Schaub as the backup to Vick, ESPN.com has learned, is Anthony Wright, who played with the Cincinnati Bengals in 2006.

Despite starting only two games in three seasons, and winning neither of them, Schaub is highly regarded around the NFL. The former Virginia standout, a third-round pick by Atlanta in 2004, he has completed 84 of 161 passes for 1,033 yards, with six touchdown passes and six interceptions.

Schaub was a restricted free agent this spring and the Falcons made him the highest qualifying offer possible, at $2.3 million. That qualifying offer meant that, had another club signed Schaub to an offer sheet, and Atlanta not matched it, the Falcons would have received first- and third-round draft choices as compensation.

"

haha, fucking hilarious. The Texans might be a worse run organization than the Raiders. You pass on Young, the hometown guy, and instant fan favorite, to sign Carr to a longterm deal because he is "your QB of the future" when everyone else pretty much knew wasn't going to be a solid QB. Then you draft Williams #1, passing on Bush. Then you release Carr a year later. Not that Schaub is that bad of a QB, but god damn, how many times are they gonna fuck shit up?

Well considering there is nothing wrong our out of line with that statement, I don't see what your point was. All the evidence you need is from the game this past season when Young played in Houston. Did you see how alive and energized the Texan fans were rooting for a player on ANOTHER team. Thats how every game would have been for the Texans if they had drafted Young and not signed Carr.

^^^ and that isn't even the point I thought you were trying to make. They passed on Young and told their fans who wanted him that Carr was their QB of the future. Now, less than one year later, they seemingly realized their talent evaluation of Carr was clearly wrong. Completely inept.

They made a complete 180 on Carr and alienated a large chunk of their fanbase at the same time. Whether or not picking Mario was the right move or not you simply CAN NOT ARGUE that the fanbase was accepting of it.. admitting Carr isn't the answer is just a slap in the face to their fans..

Nobody would be a solid QB with the swiss cheese O line they put out there......

I really wanted the panthers to go after Schaub, but we could steal Carr for a 3rd or 4th rounder now.

^^Thats basically what I was trying to say.

Being from Atlanta, and having watched Schaub the few times he has played, I really wish he had gone to a better team.

Apparently the Falcons are going to receive the Texans' 2007 and 2008 second-round picks, are they're going to swap 2007 first-round picks (Falcons moving from 10th to 8th).

Yeah, I know, cause Schaub has played in SO many games, has won more playoff games, and has better stats than Vick. You are exactly right. He is a better NFL QB.

When he came in while vick was hurt ATL fans were begging to keep him as the starter.

Yep, except we weren't. Petrino is gonna have him back playing as good as, if not better than he was a few years ago. Either way, Vick sells out games, Schaub doesn't. Neither did Carr.

Carr really was not that bad of a QB last year. I may be wrong, but I thought he led the NFL in completion percentage. Granted his line sometimes doesn't give him time to throw down field so his high completion % may be due to throwing underneath all the time.

Anyway maybe Schaub will do better than Carr in Texas, but I'd be surprised. Also where does it mention that Carr was released?? I doubt they'd just up and let him go without seeing what Schaub can do. Maybe you're just predicting the future?

I hate playing him, don't get me wrong...but we're one of the only teams he is consistent against.

Vick is a better running QB, but Schaub is just a better QB

David Carr would be an improvement over Jake Delhomme.

Carr has NEVER had an offensive line and still put up good numbers and is still fairly young.

Why would the falcons pay Schaub that much money to be a back-up QB? It was to prevent other teams from poaching him because they could see that the kid is talented.

Simply playing defense from talent hoarding perspective. Petrino, as a new coach, seems to think he has gaps to fill. Thus he convinces them to trade since he would fetch a high price and the Falcons are now able get more players that they would need.

Quit bitching about Vick vs. Schaub, this goes a lot deeper than that.

^^^^^that, college, and the fact that after 7 (?) seasons in the nfl Vick is still as inept at throwing the ball as he was his first game. Schaub isn't as athletic, or flashy, but he will turn out to be the better QB.

exactly, they gave him the max tender offer when he was a restricted fa.....so a team could have beat that offer, but they would have had to give up 2 draft pics too.

^^^ Well, Petrino has pretty much stated this will be Michael Vick's team. By getting rid of Schaub, he's reinforcing that.

So what we're going to see is an offensive line built for Vick, better regard for blocking receivers and tight ends that can still catch, little regard for runningbacks, and Vick has no excuses left if he cannot do anything with the Falcons with Petrino as coach.

So in two years, Michael Vick will be a hero or a zero. And we'll no longer have this "half of the fans think he's awesome, and half thinks he's beyond overrated".

1) The Falcons went 13-3 the first year under Mora and made it to the NFC Championship

2) Mora put Vick in the West Coast offense which was beyond stupid.

3) The Falcons struggles the past two years have been because of their inept defense. It's a testament to Vick's strong play that they hovered at .500 despite their defensive woes.

Personally, I dont love the move to get rid of Schaub. Having a good backup QB is a nice luxury, particularly when your QB is mobile and injury prone. However, Atlanta needs some serious upgrades at multiple positions and it looks like they got quite a bit for Schaub.

If i was a Houston fan I'd be PISSED right now. Usually teams don't admit this quickly that they screwed up. The Mario Williams pick and the Carr long term deal are disastrous now.

I agree. Esp since they got a ton for him, and Vicks contract pretty much prevents him from being traded. People are acting like fucking Vick is fucking Joey Harrington or something. Even in Vicks bad years, they are at or around .500 And the west coast thing was a fucking terrible move. I will be the first to admit Vick is not the best passer, so why they went to that I do not know. And if Vick can't succeed under Petrino, I will give up hope on him totally. But they can fill some major holes in the team with what they got for Schaub. I am really looking forward to this season.

^Yeah, I am glad I am not a Houston fan, especially since Young came in and dominated the Texans and showed the Texan fans what they could have had.

the falcons at the bottom of the league in both pass attempts and pass yards last year, while being first in rush attempts, yards and yards per carry, so I'd say it was more just the bottom half of Vick, and two quality RB's that are to thank.

^ haha are you serious?

They are a RUSHING offense. I bet the Falcons high rank in rushing yards had nothing to do with the fact Vick rushed for 1,000 of them himself

I've butchered you guys in this Vick shit for three straight seasons. There is nothing wrong with RUNNING the ball.

PS. Warrick Dunn wasn't very productive last year.

I am too. He was wasting away just sitting on the bench holding a clipboard.

^^No, if anything, it makes them look worse. It is a move in the right direction, but it also shows that they are admitting that they totally fucked up by passing on Young for a QB they apparently didn't have as much confidence in as they thought they did.
