I've been operating in windows XP on my mobo for about 9 months now, run through the ide. I just installed a sata II drive this afternoon and it will no longer boot. I've checked the bios to ensure the boot order is correct and it is. Funny thing is that when I unplug the sata II drive it works fine and then I can plug it in once im in windows to access the drive. There has to be some way to remedy this, as I am sure it is somewhere in the bios. I am also considering installing vista on the sata 2 to test it.

Here are my specs:
Asrock Dual SATA II mobo
AMD Athlon 64 3500
Western Digital 320 GB IDE HDD (os drive)
Samsung 160GB IDE HDD
Seagate baracuda 500 GB SATA II
ATI Radeon 9600 XT Ultra
2GB pc3200 ram.

thanks.

let me add that I have a 650 watt power supply and that if the power was an issue that it wouldnt work after I boot into windows. The computer hangs up after I start to boot as if it had just lost the drive

it's got to be the boot order - doesn't make any sense otherwise

My MB has 3rd party RAID drivers for the SATA drives. Try if you can access the drive using hirens boot CD. Will safe mode work?

Check the BIOS again - I think I had to make a setting that said to boot the SATA hard drive first (not just boot to HDD first).

Because that same RAID software is also the drivers for the drive controller.

My PC did the SAME thing when I tried to install windows XP without loading the RAID drivers. Hope you have a floppy drive.

http://www.nliteos.com will let you slipstream drivers into your windows setup CD for XP. I think vista probably should have most drivers integrated but at the launch event they showed us how to make a slipstreamed version of it too using vista's tools so that's also available

you don't need this but if other people need instructions,
Integration of nVRaid drivers into XP, W2k and W2k3 (32-bit), new and easy method, that works: http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=51140
