Let's say I am flying out to San Francisco for Easter, and I had been asked to take a jar of moonshine to be given to a friend who lives out there.
I was just wondering what the best way to do such a thing would be. If I were going to do such a thing, I would probably empty the contents of the jar and put it in Aquafina bottles.
What would you do? 3/31/2007 9:20:13 AM |

^^I don't know about that, I've taken everclear in my packed luggage up to NY before. I've also taken, and seen other people take, pure ethanol on a plane to Costa Rica for scientific purposes (cause it's a pain in the ass to get chemicals shipped into the country for scientific purposes). 3/31/2007 11:33:25 AM |

funny story... when we went on a cruise, my husband bought several bottles of duty-free rum, and a couple of bottles of really smooth tequila. the idiot packed both bottles of tequila in his toiletry bag, thinking this would protect them.
well, we're at the baggage carousel waiting for our luggage, and this awful smell is permeating and wafting from our group of luggage. we think the guy in front of us has BO, but the smell follows us to the car.
then it hits him - the stinch of tequilla. EVERYTHING in his suitcase reeks! we had to drive home with the windows down. had to throw away a lot of his clothes. and i believe we threw away the suitcase. 3/31/2007 11:41:30 AM |

i saw on a mythbusters episode that some moonshine is strong enough to eat through plastic bottles....that's the reason it is commonly found in glass jars or bottles...fyi 3/31/2007 12:02:29 PM |

dont forget about the 3oz rule. any liquids/gels, etc have to be in 3oz containers or less if you are carrying them on. so if you do take your moonshine, you will definitely have to check it in your luggage. 3/31/2007 12:32:26 PM |

i would put it in a sturdy container that is leak proof, nalgene bottles are a good example because they will never break or leak
secondly i would never take it on the plane. put it in your suitcase and check it.
finally never tell anyone its in there. i bought some duty free alcohol and when i told the flight attendant who was checking my bag she said they might take it because its over a certain proof (keep in mind this was crown royal select single barrel whiskey) very expensive stuff. they didn't take it but i was pissed when she told me that. 3/31/2007 12:40:09 PM |

fyi: the people that were transporting "pure ethanol" for chemistry-related purposes:
ethanol that is meant for chemical use is denatured (e.g. they stick noxious chemicals in it to make it unfit for human consumption) to let it slide without putting the usual alcohol tax on it. so it wasn't pure ethanol. 4/1/2007 1:14:39 AM |

it says over 70% ABV is not allowed, but under that is so long as its in its retail container. they DO allow that container to have been opened though, so just get another liquor bottle and stick it in there. 4/1/2007 8:21:21 PM |

Heres just some information you might want to remember. In NC moonshine is what is known as untaxed liquor. Therefore, if you are pulled over and the police find moonshine in ur car they will seize your car and arrest you. You will not get your car back, it goes to the school board for auction. It doesnt matter the amount either, if you have any illegal, untaxed alcohol they will seize whatever vehicle it is in. Boat, plane, car etc. If you think you can sneak a liquid thats unlabeled in a glass jar onto a commercial plane these days then you will be rudely awakened. 4/1/2007 9:05:28 PM |

pure ethanol is used in the preparation of certain types of samples for geologic investigations... instead of buying the 'pure ethanol' chemical supply stuff, the people i know in geology at NCSU just walk across the street and buy everclear at the ABC store. works just as well and is cheaper.
Once when i was living in the dorms one of the guys in my suite stole a bottle of pure ethanol from the chem lab. they were making drinks with the shit. i told them they were stupid. I used it the last day to clean the walls.4/2/2007 7:58:39 AM |

If it is that important why don't you just FedEx it? At least that way if someone has a problem with it you don't risk getting thrown off an expensive plane trip. 4/2/2007 9:44:24 AM |
