Ford unveils Shelby GT-H Convertible, #001 sells at Barrett-Jackson for $250K

*****************************************************

that's not really new, as the coupe has been out for a while, that is just the convertible. here is a mustang that is totally new, debuting at the new york auto show:

2008 Shelby GT500KR - The King of the Road returns!

"This morning, Ford announced that the mighty King of the Road Shelby GT500KR will be making a return in the spring of 2008 -- just in time to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the original. Only 1,000 of these special Mustangs will be built, and they will definitely be the fastest ones yet! The team at SVT is tweaking the 5.4L supercharged V-8 with new calibrations, a cold-air induction kit and 3.73:1 final drive ratio. The KR will be rated at 540hp/510lb-ft of torque, making it the most powerful Mustang ever. "

i watched the whole auction live (yes, all 8 hours). the gt-h convertible revealing was stupid. the bid was stuck at the opening of $50,000 foreeeeeeeeeeever. there were some bidders actually laughing at the staff who tried to get them to bid. they wouldn't let that slide, of course. the ford ceo then threw in a one-of-a-kind fender guitar that was painted to match the car. the bid then went to ~$70,000 and stalled once again. then, the ford ceo, craig jackson, and carrol shelby had to throw in all kinds of stupid extras (like their t-shirts and picking the car up at shelby's shop) to nag the bidding.

the thing only has 314-ish horsepower. the only incentive to buy the thing was that it'll be the only one to not be rented out by hertz. the hertz bound cars will all have "a traction control defeat defeater" to help cut down on possible ragging out and wrecks. if the owner doesn't drive this car, i can see it being pretty valuable a few decades from now.

wait, what?

so with the guitar, it jumped from 50K to 70K, but with tshirts it went from 70K to 250K???

oh so that's what the guitar in the pic below was... i was wondering what the hell a guitar was doing.

i don't think the shirts were what got it going past 70k. i think it was just maybe a matter of "wow, if that guy is willing to pay $80k, maybe i should get in on it. and so forth". alot of auctions stalled at one point, and then saw a flurry of bids.

the dude who purchased it was going to buy it no matter what... i mean its a 250k write off and you get a car too.

not to mention he owns 6 other shelby first cars.

That may be but you don't need to turn the traction control off to hang the rear end out. I drove a GT350H back in November and nearly lost it going around a corner. I gave it a bit of gas and hung the tail out waaaaay further than I meant to. Luckly I managed to get it back in line before completely lossing it, but there was a brief moment there when I felt my heart come to a complete stop.

It's dissapointing that they don't put an manual tranny in any/all of those cars. I would assume that only car guys rent them anyway, so why not?

I don't think there's anything anyone can do to the current gen Mustang to make it not look like crap, it looks like a cheap piece of plastic no matter what's done to it

On a related note: I was in Ft. Lauderdale this past weekend and Jack Roush was pulling into the marina in his 160 ft yacht "Mustang Sally"

everyone says they're ugly.. i disagree, they may be built like crap and they may have a cheap feeling interior (not nearly as bad as any gm save caddy and vette) but they're not ugly.

ford needs to make a deal with darton and use dry sleeved aluminum blocks to save some weight
the chassis has the ability to handle but with that mammoth iron anchor in the front the gt500 is not going to. now the fr500 won the first scca event it was ever entered in right out of the factory so the chassis has the ability. sure Irs will always have an advantage but you really can't claim a solid axle vehicle can't turn

Can Someone explain the purpose of those two strings on the hood in the first picture, OEP posted?

that car uses hood pins to hold the hood down rather than a latch and the string make sure you don't lose them when you pull them out to open the hood.

weight savings over the whole latch/cable assembly.

holds the hood down better at high speeds.

looks.

etc.

The most recent Mustang body style is terrible... no matter how much plastic you attach to it, it will never look good. Ford fans should push for a new body style ASAP...

And I'm sure, from the prototypes I've seen, I will be able to say the same thing about the new Camaro... This retro stuff sucks.

we just got in a white/blue stripped shelby gt500 today with every option, like the dvd navigation. we also got in another "california special" (we've sold like two of those so far this week). we also have a black "shelby gt", which is a gt with a bunch of power and appearance upgrades that we put on.
