good cars, but they have a number of problems... the 03's especially have a shitty clutch and pressure plate, throttle can get stuck (recall for that), and other things like rear end noise. They have forged internals but the pistons are still the weak link.
on the other hand a friend of mine made 427rwhp and 390torque with a cone filter and a catback... but he's made a number of warranty claims on his 03, although he is a bit of a hypochondriac 4/1/2007 12:16:46 AM |

had a black 03 convertible.
made 500 whp with pulley, filter, and cat back.
IRS is a piece of shit for straight line pulls. camaro SS's with a few bolt ons still beat me. corvettes still beat me. TransAms still beat me.
Its too damn heavy and has valve problems. Clutch sucked. Had to replace the pressure plates.
in the end it doesnt matter because I wrapped it around a tree.
make sure you can handle the power because obviously, I sure as hell couldn't. 4/1/2007 11:15:34 AM |

Had one for 2.5 years, not a reliable car. Half of the time was spent in the dealership getting the clutch and rear end fixed, 3 times because of a shitty throw out bearing design which in the end damaged the rest of the clutch pack. One time, the car stalled on me at 110mph after hiting a slight bump on the road. No power brakes or steering for a second until the engine got started again because of the engine being off, not good it this happened in the twisties. 4/1/2007 1:02:39 PM |

no, really, the clutches do suck on these. I have never powershifted nor do I rest my foot on the clutch, maybe a few burnouts a year but that's it. Here's a link to the stock clutch life and TOB problems.

my cousin has a stock 04 cobra we took it to rockingham a couple weeks ago and it ran a 12.6 he had problems on a few of the runs when the tranny heated up, couldn't get it into gear quick enough and missed shifts, probably related to the clutch problems
it's about to become the shop car at the place he works......the supercharger is coming off and they are puting on twin turbos
the shop is going to fab a plate to allow the stock cobra supercharger to bolt up to the other mustangs for the aftermarket 4/1/2007 10:05:59 PM |

that's a good idea with all the people going to kb's and whipples. has anyone else done it yet?
good to know on the clutch issues, hadn't heard much on that. i have heard about the irs problems though.
fwiw to anyone, i'm casually looking at an 03 drop top. completely stock, but it does have a solid rear swapped in from a gt with the cobra brakes. miles are a little higher than i'd like for the year (52k), but the price is right and he's willing to deal on top of that.4/1/2007 10:24:57 PM |

was the only 6 speed the cobra R??
i took a co-workers cobra out for a drive. and i swear there was a 6th speed.. people say it must have been a cobra R, but i know it wasnt an R.
it had aftermarket pulleys (from what the guy said) so i dont know if he put the money down and got a 6spd tranny.

the only place they seem to be a bit weak is racing from a highway role. which is mostly gay anyway, especially if you take it seriously.
from a dig and through the twisties they appear to be pretty competetive. LSx cars seem to give them the most trouble, but those motors are just amazing in and of themselves so that's not surprising.
at least they're not like supras, 800whp and 12's, lol. 4/4/2007 12:59:49 AM |

nahh but seriously though... its a 7 liter motor in a car with alot of aluminum and some carbon fiber. it should be pretty quick

yeah but honestly, stock for stock OR mod for mod, i'd MUCH MUCH MUCH rather rock a 94+ supra TT than ANY mustang post muscle car era. not because of racing or what have you, but damn those supras look fucking sweet (and yes i'm biased cause i owned a '90 7m-gte and always dreamed of a 2jz-gte ) 4/4/2007 9:54:35 PM |

no offense but your supra looks like shit.. i'd rather have a clean fox body notch back
but i agree mkivs look way better than any mustang... the newest gen is the closest but still the mkiv looks good and is aerodynamic. something no mustang has ever been.
but i'm also not paying 25k for an almost 15 year old car.

yeah, the mkivs do look nice and the 2jz is an impressive engine despite the odd high hp/low results phenomenon. imo, the styling is getting aged and really showing it's 90's heritage though. i don're really care about looks much though. why else would i be considering this car.

true, but high 10's?? that's pretty much unheard of faster than supercar status. even on street tires slips of deep 11's are turning up.4/4/2007 11:10:22 PM |

Typical Mk III fanboy. I used to have a Mk III... 7M motors are complete crap. I know so many people who have spun bearings (including myself)... forget the headgasket thing, that can be taken care of if you're careful. I know it's possible to make serious power on a 7M, but why do you think so many people do the 1JZ swap? Shit even a healthy stock rx-7 motor can do 400+ rwhp no problem with the proper turbo and proper tuning.
Don't get me wrong, I like the Mk IV Supras, but you can't get a clean unmolested and lower mileage 6 speed for under 30k. Unless you're loaded (or willing to have mad debt) there's no point in modding a 10+ year old car with 0% depreciation. You're better off keeping it stock and watching its value go up. And there's no way in hell I am going to buy a modded out Supra, especially the ones with hideous body kits.

I know several people with modded out Supras. As in built motors, single turbos, crazy fuels systems, and other shit. Doesn't really affect the value of the car. Clean, tastefully modded (most Supra owners demonstrate good taste, a relative rarity in the import crowd) ones usually bring at least as much as nice stockers.
As for the 03 Cobra? The only reason they really fall short of being awesome is the fact that they weigh a minimum of 3700 lbs. You can make awesome power with them though, and as long as the tune is good and you don't lean on them too hard all the time, they are pretty durable. If you just want a fast, fun, nice looking 500hp street car, buy one and do a chip, pulley, maybe long tube headers/exhaust, and a tune. You'll be pleased. 4/5/2007 11:08:08 AM |
