So here is my situation.. I have a degree in Education and could teach Social Studies in middle or high school. The only thing is I'm not sure which one I want to teach. At this point I'm kinda leanin towards middle school. One of my main reasons is I'm only 23 and I just think it might be weird teaching kids in high school who are only 5 years younger than me. Teaching middle school would widen the age gap more. I know middle school kids have a rep for being crazy so that would be my only reason to not want to teach it. And I know I'd have to work on my discipline level because that's not my strong point .
I think teaching 8th grade social studies would be pretty cool (NC History) but I wouldn't care for 7th grade (Asia/Africa history, etc.). In high school I would love to teach US History and/or Psychology but I'm afraid I might get stuck teaching Economics or Political Science.. both not my favorite.
I just don't know. I'm torn. Can any of you out there offer any pointers? Anybody that has taught one of them or even both? Some advice would be greatly appreciated! 4/1/2007 10:41:30 PM |

Teach early middle school, something like 6th grade. I teach 6th grade now and it is cool going to work and have kids that still really love their teacher. Also you get stories like this:

Those middle school girls going through puberty are going to annoy the hell out of you. Like ^ said, 6th grade may be better. 4/1/2007 11:23:37 PM |

in high school you will get one or two kids who are actually interested in the material, in middle school you will not. middle school is a damn joke, teach high school. 4/1/2007 11:32:39 PM |

middle school is a holding cell for puberty, its three yeas of basicly angst and being a jerk
all middle schoolers are jerks, don't you remember how much it sucked? 4/1/2007 11:41:25 PM |

Go teach some high schoolers. Juniors or seniors. They should be easier to deal with than some of the shits in middle school. 4/2/2007 12:12:59 AM |

I'd say try middle school first. The narrow age gap between high schoolers and yourself might blur the authority lines. still need to establish some Cesar Milan style dominance.

I would teach middle school over high school any day. I would also go for earlier like 6th graders But why not apply to both high schools and middle schools and then whoever gives you the job you can pick between them which subject matter you like the most. That way you don't limit yourself to one or the other Also if you ever need help grading papers hit me up...I love that stuff I help J's Aunt grade papers when we go up to see her She always slacks off before we come and visit so she has some work for me to do...LOL 4/2/2007 12:27:46 AM |

I would imagine jr's or seniors in hs would be easiest to teach. Most of the complete fucks have dropped out by that age. 4/2/2007 12:49:03 AM |

who cares about the age gap? typically, the youngest teachers at my high school were considered the coolest. They know you still have authority. 4/2/2007 5:00:01 AM |

srs are some of the worst to teach in HS because they are ready to graduate and they expect you to pass them even if they are failing so they can graduate on time.
I have had parents come and yell at me for failing their child....The child had a 56 avg before the final and made a 23 on the final. 4/2/2007 6:50:42 AM |

I was teaching juniors and seniors at age 22 (student teaching earlier than that), and I look young for my age, but had no problems. I grew a goatee, wore a tie every day, and didn't try to be the kids' friend. It's much easier for a man in his early 20s to get respect from this age group than it is for a woman of the same age.
I liked teaching 11th and 12th grades, because (most of) the students act like adults. Even those who aren't college-bound see graduation in the not-too-distant future, so they generally will make at least a decent effort at their schoolwork. 4/2/2007 10:51:52 AM |

nothing against middle schoolers, they were alot of fun, but if you are in it to teach, you are gonna be able to do more of that at a higher level. plus there are more opportunities for coaching if you want to do that too and make more money. 4/2/2007 4:51:29 PM |

The HS chicks are more developed and can probably get away with banging easier, but some of the middle school chicks are horny as hell and the boys at that age are so immature that the chicks will just be falling all over your dick. 4/2/2007 5:05:34 PM |

thanks nighthawk, never thought of it that way. ill keep that in mind though
and that cary academy job sounds great, except it says you need 3 years of full time teaching experience. sucks.

my mom taught both and absolutely hated middle schoolers. high school kids have their share of problems as well, but nothing to rival the middleschool ones. 4/2/2007 7:08:52 PM |

Not necessarily.
If they still do it like they did when I was there, you get looked at and do a "test run" in the classroom with the AP class. Then after you teach a lesson, the board asks the class what they thought.
We got 4 new teachers that way.
Be careful, those kids are brutal. 4/2/2007 8:35:07 PM |

I'm going back to 7th grade next year. It's going to be nice because I'll track with most of the kids I am teaching now, and I also get to continue teaching the AIGs. There are some days when they really make teaching fun. 4/4/2007 7:18:40 PM |
