and NCSU got 6th this time even though the write-ups are the same as last year...

http://southernpigskin.com/page.cfm?story=11349&cat=exclusives

Quote :
"6. NC State – Carter-Finley Stadium has recently emerged as one of the premier football facilities in the south. Upgrades to the Murphy Center, a stunning athletic building located in the south endzone, have been the focal point of facility expansion. In recent years, NC State has constructed facilities that can compare favorably to just about any school around. With the aforementioned Murphy Center earning high praise and recent improvements to the press box and luxury suites being implemented, Carter-Finley now has stately feel to it, much more so than it did in years past. Wolfpack fans don’t fit the typical Carolina mold. They aren’t quiet, aren’t proper and tailgate with reckless abandon. Safe to say, Raleigh can be a hostile place to play if the circumstances insist. State fans show up in droves hours before sunrise for big games, flooding the vast area around the stadium with hopes of claiming the prime spots. The scene close to kickoff quickly turns into a sea of red, both outside the stadium and in it. Though the venue itself holds just under 60,000, Carter-Finely routinely outdoes itself, serving as an intimidating atmosphere for opponents and an emotional sparkplug for the home team. Despite its modest capacity, few stadiums in the conference get louder. State fans hold nothing back.

"1. Tennessee – There isn’t a setting that showcases the true passion and meaning of college football better than Neyland Stadium. Regardless of any and all conditions, well over 104,000 Volunteer faithful show up in Knoxville on every home Saturday, creating a scene unlike any other. Neyland itself is a mountain of a facility. A steep, almost scary-steep, double-deck bowl build helps the stadium holds its sound in as well as any venue in the nation. Nestled between the historic center of the old school campus and the Tennessee River, the area around the stadium is perfect for tailgating – both on land and water. Thousands of fans arrive by boat, forming a powerful fleet deemed the “Vol’ Navy” by Tennessee fans. With pre-game festivities taking place on land, amidst the Blue Ridge Mountains, and on water, few tailgating experiences are as impressive. Inside, patrons form what becomes a city of orange – an almost blinding sight for those on field level. Tennessee fans are rabid, loyal and relentless, especially in their enthusiasm when singing “Rocky Top”, the unofficial fight song played dozens of times each game. Tradition is almost overwhelming on gameday: there’s the Vol Walk, Smokey the blue tick hound, the famed “T” entrance, the checkerboard endzones and the ever-anticipated PA announcement that it’s...“football time in Tennessee”. It doesn’t take long to understand and appreciate the importance of Volunteer football in the state of Tennessee. The success of the flagship football program may tinker with the attitude of some states; in Tennessee, it defines it."

"The SEC East in general will be the best and toughest division in all of college football and it won’t even be close. This is no novel realization and yes it could have been said in the past a number of times, but the talent, balance and depth of this division will raise its’ reputation to new heights in 2007. First and foremost, you have the defending national champions. While young, they deserve the respect that comes with that title. Georgia and Tennessee enter the year with star quarterbacks and high expectations. Rising South Carolina returns a plethora of starters and has Steve Spurrier at the helm. All four of these programs will likely be pre-season top 25 teams. High-flying Kentucky beat Georgia and Clemson last season and returns arguably the best quarterback in the league in senior Andre’ Woodson. Vanderbilt made the rest of the league take notice in 2006 and returns their dynamic quarterback as well, junior Chris Nickson. Being a cellar-dweller in this division will be like renting oceanfront property somewhere else. "

I wouldn't say C-F is that much 'nicer'

I hate UNC like the plague, but Kenan really is a beautiful stadium. If I was going sightseeing, I'd much rather go there.

However, to watch a game, it's not even close. Kenan seats 60,000 people.... but it's probably smaller than my high school stadium. Carter Finley could hold 110,000 people if we packed them in there like that. The seating sucks, the atmosphere is nonexistent, and there's absolutely no tailgating.

As far as serving the purpose of a football stadium, Carter-Finley should be up there with Lane, Doak, and Death Valley

Edit: Oh, and no way in hell is Bobby Dodd nicer than C-F. Cool setting, but its really a hideous stadium...and one of the most outdated in the country. It actually is the oldest stadium still in use in Div 1A football. It was opened in something like 1910 (?)

Edit2: And I just noticed it said that in the write-up. 1913...I was close

they must have gone to georgia tech during a georgia game b/c otherwise their stadium is never even close to full and usually has as many fans from the opposing team

Kenan has a nice fieldhouse, and trees. Other than that I think C-F is much more attractive...don't see what's so special about Kenan, really.

The concourse at Kenan is small. When I went in there one time, it seriously felt like 1/2 to 3/4 the size of Carter-Finley's.

People talk about how beautiful the area surrounding Kenan Stadium is and all the trees, but we've got trees too. In fact we have people tailgating amongst some of the trees at the athletic complex. I remember when the student lot used to be the old Trinity lot instead of the Fairgrounds lot, which was a free public first come first serve lot, and the walk to the stadium was incredible. Getting in wasn't as much of a chore as it is nowadays, and you could tailgate longer if you wanted. You'd take a beer or two with you around 15-20 minutes before kickoff and head on to the stadium. Along the way you'd have to walk through what I called the forrest lot, and you'd come out of the wooded area, and see the stadium rise up above all the tailgaters. Plus it didn't really seem like you had to worry about the ALE or cops bothering you.

I honestly do not see what's the fascination with Kenan. True, they have a few pine trees. True, they have a good weight room. But beyond that... their seating is too tight, their concourse is too small, the asphalt in the concourse is old and cracked and uneven, the stairs to the upper level seating are too small, the press box and luxury boxes are just flat out weird looking ... I just don't see what the fascination is.

lines for bathrooms suck at kenan too. at the state game last season, i waited for like 20 minutes. but then again maybe it's not the stadium, maybe it's just the fact that so many male tarheel fans sit down to pee.

I actually think it's a great situation here at Carter finley- We left the north end zone capable of adding an upper deck, it'll be a long time before it happens, but I'd expect us to be upwards of 70k in 7-10 years. We enjoy tailgating, and a rather raucous stadium for under 60K. Some recent loud games to me are UVA 2004 and FSU 2006 (this year). I'd say we certainly represent the crowd size of at least 75K, when we have much less than that. I wouldn't put is in Death Valley's level, or even Doak for that matter, however if we ever get to 80K, it would be pretty nasty.

At Kenan, it's a totally different atmosphere. It's not that loud, the concourse is very small and makes it very difficult to walk through with more than 17 people on the concourse at the same time, and they have backrests on their seats which is terrible for guys over 5'10". Yea they have some nice trees and other scenery, but that's not what I look forward to on Saturdays in the fall, I'm kind of interested in football when I head off to the stadium. The lack of tailgating is what is really laughable at Kenan. Also, don't try and get out of Chapel Hill until about 3 hours after the game, that's certainly not anyone's fault, but doesn't change the fact that the city is a zoo on football Saturdays. Their fans can rant and rave about Kenan and their fanbase (and they have beaten us outright 2 years in a row, and 3 years in a row in the record book) but Mack brown left UNc for the simple fact that UNC lost two games in 96, lost one in 97 and on senior day in 97 with an alliance bowl caliber team, couldn't fill Kenan up against hated rival Duke with a rock solid team. All I got to say is good luck Butchy. If he doesn't win 7 games next season, it'll go right back to regualr ole Kenan in no time in 08. I'd like for TOB to contribute to this.

CF is definitely better overall than Keeeenan anyday IMO.
