Has anyone done this or know anyone who has done it? I have a friend who leaving in a few weeks for basic training and he says after that he will probably be deployed for a few years...is this true? 4/5/2007 3:00:31 AM |

Why? I was reading another air force thread and people were saying air force only gets deployed for 4 months at a time. Why is pararescue that much longer? 4/5/2007 3:04:39 AM |
Shiesty All American 1596 Posts user info edit post |
because the PJs (pararescue) are some of the most elite service members of the AF. I do not think your friend will deploy anytime soon if he is going PJ. it take at least two years of training before they're operative. 4/5/2007 3:07:13 AM |

Yeah, apparently I am not going to see him for four years. This makes me really sad. Is pararescue dangerous? All I know is they jump out of planes and stuff. 4/5/2007 3:12:23 AM |

I can tell you their motto is "That others may live"--if that gives you any idea. It is considered an elite force.

^ No, the PJ motto is 'that others may live' and the CG rescue swimmer motto is 'So others may live' or something to that effect. Same meaning, slightly different wording. 4/5/2007 4:31:04 AM |

Understanding that your friend has not yet started basic training, worrying about pararescue deployments premature at this point. The training is very long and they have a very high attrition rate.
I hope that he succeeds, but I recommend that you take a wait and see approach to it. 4/5/2007 11:10:56 AM |

^ Thanks. I don't want to get into a discussion about who is more elite or has the hardest training, but I do know that PJ's are able to go on missions with every special forces unit including SEALs, Delta Force, Rangers, etc. Therefore they have to be able to physically do what everyone else can do 4/5/2007 10:43:57 PM |

And I cry once more
Hopefully by now he has found the message board that is run by a current PJ instructor down at Hulbert Field. He should read as much as possible on the pipeline.
You will still be able to see him during parts of his training. Its not like they train on the moon.
Best of luck to him if he really wants it.

Air force pj's get extensive medical training in addition to most other forms SF training. Then they are attached to other SF units. They tend to pretty much go from one mission to the other as there are far too few of them.

The AF PJ's are NOT attached to other units - you won't see them doing "Snatch n Grabs" with the Army SF guys in Iraq for example, and you probably won't see them taking down terrorist like Delta or painting targets during Shock and Awe in Baghdad.
There is no Air Force Special Forces. Yeah, compared to the rest of the AF they're pretty highspeed, but after reading that little article about their training I'd still have to say they can't stack up to the other guys in SOC (Special Operations Command). Each group has its own mission, I just can't figure out what PJ's is. And I'm too lazy to look it up 4/13/2007 10:10:56 PM |

Any body that said AF has n0 Special Forces hasn't been through some their training. And yes you will see PJ's on snatch and grabs etc. Generally they retrieved downed or injured airman - that was their mandate. Since that time and the advent of JSOC (joint special operations command) their mission has changed. Their were 2 PJ's with Delta in Mogidishu as well as an Air Force Combat Controller (another little known AF SF position) - He was a friend of mine. Delta in fact is made up of SF Operators from all branches. People that haven't been there shouldn't talk about that with which they are unfamiliar. (with your shield or on it) was translated from something Spartan mothers used to say to their sons as they went in to battle. If one was likely to run he would probably drop his shield first. If injured or killed he would be carried on it like a stretcher and if he returned victorious he would be carrying it so yes they may have used the line in 300. In 1989 another special forces unit within the Air Force Security Police (at that time) was formed and nicknamed "Ready Merlin" . Their mission was and probably still is classified. As yo your friend "10 to 1 not making the thing about these schools is their mistique. They are designed so that a reasonably athletic person with HIGH committment level can get through it - the key lies in the level of desire. 4/14/2007 11:57:32 AM |

The physical standards from indoc are nothing to laugh at. They are very similar to the other branches special ops. While they do have A hell day, they also have motivation week. Its about two days shorter than hell week. Who do you think is sent after the SEALS???

There is so much wrong in that one paragraph I don't even know where to begin, but I will try my best . The air force DOES NOT HAVE SPECIAL FORCES. Special forces is a job only found in the army. The Air force has special tactics which are part of the special operations community hence JSOC. They are not attached to any army unit. Being attached to army SO normally refers to a support position. They provide tactical and nontactical rescue, you might have remembered them going after the lost climbers awhile back. Delta is NOT made up of various branches, they are all army. They have members that have been in other branches but if they are Delta they are army. Again, SF operators are only in the army so I think your statement is sorta correct but it was dumb luck Although Delta isn't comprised of only prior SF and the term "operator" is not normally used when talking about SF. Unless you have done 40 in virginia you aren't an operator for many within the community. The navy has something similar to Delta that pulls from NSW but it is still pretty much under the radar.4/14/2007 1:35:11 PM |
