where do you live?? that'll tell you what kind of antenna you'll need. do you live in N. Raleigh, near state, cary, garner, apex, morrisville, east raleigh?

If youre looking for an indoor ant. one that looks like that is the best. They sell them at best buy they are made by Terk.

That website tells you about outside ant (which are usually better than indoor).

you should be good getting the Terk HDTVa antenna from either radioshack or bestbuy. $30-$40.. (the one moron has pictured)

I think that area is about 5 miles away from the antenna array, so you'll be able to get CBS, CW, MyN, FOX, ABC, NBC no problem.. UNC/PBS maybe not since the tower is in CH.

compression artifacts and blocking on sports is reason enough. time warners feed is pretty sub-standard.

you can A to B them on a TV and a 5$ UHF antennae and find out for yourself.

Pay 3 grand for your hdtv and 100$ a month for digital cable. It's your money.

So if i don't have a built in tuner but have an hd dvr from dish network do I need just this or this and a reciever of some sorts to watch locals over the air?

use the dish receiver for satellite channels obviously.. and any HD channels they show over satellite.. and get an antenna to hook up to the TV (no additional receiver needed if your tv has a built-in ATSC tuner) for your local HD/SD channels.

Yeah HD over the air is great. NBC late night looks great, and all i paid for was a 150 dollar pci tuner, and a 35 dollar antenna. (aside from having an lcd computer monitor already).

how much of a difference does the HD Tuner make for your OTA signal quality? I have a 2.5 year old 50" Samsung DLP Monitor with no tuner. I bought a cheapo tuner a month ago - ~$70 RjTECH RJ-1000ASTC - http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16882107049
but I've plugged it up to 3 different antennas, and I'm still not happy with the picture quality. I've tried the full-sized outdoor UHF antenna, some indoor bunny ears, and most recently some tiny digital antenna with an amplifier. Even when my tuner shows a signal strength of 70+, the picture still looks considerably worse than the TWC HD signal did. I can see obvious compression artifacts, ghosting, and onscreen text looks like crap. I'm in SW Raleigh, near the Crossroads, so I should pick up the signal fine, and of course I'm using component cables from the tuner.


If I spring for a more expensive Samsung or Philips tuner, will that help? Who else uses external tuners - which ones?
Of course, i'm also looking at moving my Mac Mini into the living room and going with the eyeTV Hybrid, which is supposed to be good. http://www.elgato.com/index.php?file=products_eyetvhybrid

All current macs have dvi out. My 4 year old dell laptop has both a vga and dvi out. You'll have to pick up a dvi-hdmi cable unless your samsung has a dvi port. Those things are expensive, last summer i bought a 6 foot one for 70 bucks, but i'm sure they are way down in price now.

ok ok. yes, my Mac has a DVI, and my Samsung has DVI and HDMI-in.

but the main jist of my question if anybody knows anything is concerning the quality of external HDTV ATSC tuners. If I have a good digital signal but a brand-x tuner, will the picture suffer because of it?
