Quote :
"Dear Speaker Pelosi:

We are writing to urge you to call the House back into session immediately so that Congress can finish its work on the emergency legislation to fund the Global War on Terrorism. This funding request has been pending since February 5, but your leadership team chose to leave town for more than two weeks rather than completing this bill. As a result, our troops have been put at risk.

We are especially troubled by the House's failure to appoint conferees. The Senate appointed conferees on March 29, moments after passing its bill, but the House never did so despite passing the bill a week earlier. Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid told the Senate that he hoped the House-Senate conference would begin on March 30. That hoped-for progress has been thwarted by your failure to act.

It should go without saying that our military leaders are in the best position to know the needs of our troops, and they have left no doubt that this funding is needed urgently. General Peter Schoomaker, United States Army Chief of Staff, has written that, "without approval of the supplemental funds in April, we will be forced to take increasingly draconian measures which will impact Army readiness and impose hardships on our Soldiers and their families." Secretary of Defense Robert Gates has also emphasized the dangers of delay: "This kind of disruption to key programs will have a genuinely adverse effect on the readiness of the Army and the quality of life for soldiers and their families."

Our troops need this funding, and they need it soon. The Senate is in session and ready to work. We respectfully request that you cancel the remainder of your break, call the House back into session, appoint conferees promptly, and work in good faith to pass a clean supplemental funding bill that the President can sign as soon as possible. Every day we don't fund our troops is a day their ability to fight this war is weakened.
"

So does this make the repubs look better????

I am just sick of all this crap and want it over already

THE FUNDING IS GOING TO RUN OUT

Whatever... there are how many months until funding "runs out"?

And btw, who wrote this? Google's not showing anything.

"According to a Congressional Research Service memo dated March 28 and sent to the Senate Budget Committee, "The Army could finance the O&M (operations and maintenance) of both its baseline and war program ... through most of July 2007" by shifting around money in existing accounts."

And under a Republican controlled Congress:
Quote :
"February 14, 2005: Bush submits $82 billion supplemental bill
May 11, 2005: Bush signs the supplemental
Total time elapsed: 86 days

February 16, 2006: Bush submits $72 billion supplemental bill
June 15, 2006: Bush signs the supplemental
Total time elapsed: 119 days"

We are currently at under 67 days

you'd almost think the president wasn't negotiating with the congress for a compromise or something.

You could mention the cost of war upfront, instead of pretending like it doesn't exist to make it easier to sell again and again. Then later funding it through "emergency funding" as if it was a surprise that war was expensive still this many years in. Then turn down any funding that not requires, but just non bindingly suggests an eventual end to the war being set.

Its not the democrats not funding our troops. Its not even the republicans not funding our troops. Its this white house setting conditions such that our troops wont be funded unless it pushes their agenda and that makes everyone look bad, themselves & congress included.

Yeah, that urgency wasn't quite there in the whopping 90 days that the Republican controlled Congress was in session last year.

I'll bet that I look better than you, Boone. When was the last time you were laid? Be honest.

And about Pelosi, I just post that picture because I think it's funny--it actually looks like it has been manipulated. I mean, Pelosi doesn't look half bad for her age--if she didn't have the weird facial ticks.

Congress has already passed a troop funding bill. All the President has to do is sign it. Why isn't he supporting the troops?

The congress should be a voice for the people. The American people overwhelmingly want our troops out of Iraq. They also want a deadline for pulling out reasonably. The president is representing neither of these wishes and the congress is at least attempting to do this.

Democrats are far from perfect, and I think the pork they put in the bill is retarded beyond all counts, but I realize that some assholes won't vote for things despite it's what the country wants unless they're handed some cash.

If troops stopped getting paid, a lot of them would walk off the job.

We know that's not happening, so regardless of whatever funding is or is not approved, the troops will get paid. Other parts of the government are going to lose money, and I don't find that so bad.

A troop stands just as good a chance of getting killed with or without the House in session. This is just posturing by Republicans to make Democrats look bad in the public eye and they are using the troops for political purposes.

(Note: Democrats are no better to me. I'm just making a couple points.)

That's rich coming from the GOP, who decided their leaders didn't know what they were talking about when they ignored their assertions of just how difficult the war would be........4 years later.......

thats still how the country works

can you imagine how much more inefficient the govt would be if each member of the public was consulted about every decision thats up to the president and congress?

i would say roughly 500,000x to 600,000x more inefficient

thats why the public gets to vote on who will be President for the next 4 years so that hopefully someone with your own particular ideals and beliefs will be elected, hopefully so that that President will have similar ideas to yourself

So people won't bitch about every little thing...because they already had their vote...since thats how our country works

the president doesnt have a problem with the spending. i have yet to see a single quote from him complaining about anything other than the pullout date.

Why is the President threatening the lives of our troops?
