If you do a late withdrawal what kind of questions do they ask you in the Counseling center, so that you can drop the course?

you typically can't drop a single course. It's usually all or nothing. But what they may do is send a letter to the instructor of the class/es you're having problems with and ask them to consider your situation, be lenient and see if they'll possibly let you make up or do extra work to improve your grade.

just make an appointment and go talk to them.

i did a late drop on one of my classes, the professor was sooooo pissed that I got permission from the counseling center shrink....he didnt want to really sign it.....The next semester I took off, and I asked for a letter so I wouldnt be charged for the dorm and I got that also. I had to state my case why i shouldnt be charged. I turned it in and the same day before I got back to the dorm I had a call telling me it had been granted. It was a nice letter, saying I needed counseling before returning blah blah blah. The shrink asked me what should be in the letter.....

I had also though gone several times before then(met with a shrink or whatever they call them several times that semester). I had just finished summer school and had like 18hrs or so the Fall semester. I was really burned out....gradually went down to 9hrs, then I had to late late late drop one of those. I think because I had gone several times that semester it was easier and also I planned on taking off the next semester(went to community college the next semester before coming back).

The first part of the statement is absolutely wrong. Regarding the second part of the statement- the counselor sending a letter to the professor- this is not a mandated part of the process and I've never heard of anyone having this done to them nor did it ever happen to me. It's absurdly easy to get a course dropped, and the process is exactly the same between the period of the day after the drop deadline up until the very last day of classes. You will need several signatures: one from your adviser, one from the professor, your's (including a short statement that all will be available to read), and the counselor's. If you want just one class dropped, you need only say that you feel that by dropping this class in particular you will be able to focus your studies on your remaining classes. They will probably ask why you were not doing well in this class or why you were unfocused, and again you can say just about anything here from "I was working too much" to "family/relationship problems." If you've been to the counseling center before or have been diagnosed with a mental health disorder then you can easily use this to your advantage. You will permanently have a W on your transcript, but of course there will be no grade to count against your gpa. While I'm sure that too many will undoubtedly raise eyebrows in the future, I've never had anyone inquire about mine.

I'm sure people will bitch about my post for exposing the soft underbelly of this part of the system and blah blah blah cheapening the value of your degree. But the way I looked at it, getting a degree is more about learning the system of the real world than anything else. If such a system for getting out of a bad grade is in place, I say consider your ethics and take advantage of what you will to whatever degree you feel comfortable.

BTW, the signature from your professor is not really something they can decline. You are not asking their permission to drop you, you are asking them to acknowledge that you are dropping their class after the deadline. The only "permission" needs to come from your adviser and the counseling center. I believe this is in place so that students are not deterred from dropping a class simply because they don't get along with the professor or (at least in the student's eyes) because the professor is mean. In the event that the professor refuses to sign it for whatever reason, I believe you can go to the dept. head and have them sign it (though I'm not completely sure about this part of it).

it is not easy.....the first couple shrinks didnt want to do it, i lucked out on the last one, she is the one that basically typed up the letter for me to give to student housing and helped with the late dropping of one of the classes....she didnt write a letter to the professor, there was some form that the dean or rep had to sign and the professor had to sign(any objections sort of thing).

Some of those shrinks are hardasses....the one that i had been seeing was there that day so I got this one that helped me without it seeming like I was pulling teeth. Her letter did mispell my name and several other words though....lol

if you're dropping the course because you have a legitimate problem, then go to seek assistance in dealing with THAT PROBLEM, and not "just to get them to drop the class for you"

if you're dropping the course because you screwed up by your own mistakes and your only problem is that you don't want to deal with the consequences, you're abusing the system that's already in place.

dropping your courses shouldn't be the reason that you go to the counseling center

Just relaying what was said to be by the people at the counseling center. Also, I didn't say that you couldn't do it, just that it wasn't the typical case. Did they tell you it was very common? Do you know a lot of people who have dropped just one course? They told me "you usually can't drop just one course". They being one of the psychologist. Didn't say it was any more difficult of a process. Maybe your situation fit the bill so they didn't say anything.

It happened for me.

I wasn't just talking out of my ass, I've dropped an entire semester more than 2/3rds of the way through. And then took the next 2 semesters off. I initially went to drop just one class (was told what I said I was told). The guy wrote a letter, made several copies (each to a different instructor) and gave me the option of taking it to them or putting it in campus mail. He did this because at the time I didn't necessarily want to drop the course/s. However, afterwards I decided that it would be best for me to just drop all the courses. I never said it was a "mandated part", just that it could be done.

If you don't really have any sort of problem and are just trying to get out of a bad grade (which I don't care either way) this option may be better because as long as the teacher goes along with it you don't have to take the class again later.

I'm assuming the original poster has already done something about this. But if not, just go talk to someone over there. All anybody here can do is tell you what happened for them. The people at the counseling center can let you know of all your options and you can make the decision.

i had to do that two semesters ago and i thought it was going to be this whole process and it took less than 10 minutes. it takes longer to get the paper work done than it is to get the class dropped. they asked how i was sleeping and how my life was in general and thats it.

i was only dropping one class, too.

Different Colleges w/in the University handle things differently. The difficult part of the process is usually explaining the situation to the Dean of your College. Typically, they (the deans) severely frown upon dropping this late unless you have some kind of extreme extenuating circumstance.
