there are a metric shit-ton of apartments in charlotte. perhaps you should narrow your search down to a specific area of charlotte or else your search is going to be pretty futile

I'm moving to Charlotte for my job after graduation too.

We'll be living uptown (and paying a LOT for it) in a 2BR/2BA at Fifth & Poplar but I have been looking at rentals for several months.

Both of my brothers are in 1BRs in Charlotte, one of which was able to stay under $1000/month and the other chose to purchase.

As someone mentioned, the first step will be to narrow your search according to the area you want to live in, since Charlotte is enormous and there are lots of distinct "types" of areas. Also, decide if you want to stay in an apartment complex owned entirely by a company (like the one you mentioned) or something nicer which would be privately owned and rented (which is what we did).

The best resources I found for finding Charlotte rental condos are Craigslist (seriously) and http://www.moveuptown.com - (click View Properties and then Rentals)

and 77 normally sucks in the mornings (kind of like I-40 in the afternoons). if you could get on the other side of charlotte, it might be better for getting to work.

again, charlotte is a big place. just throwing out names most likely isn't going to work. its not like asking about KP around here. i have no idea what wesley heights is.

best advice i can give you is to find something you like online and make sure its in a nice area. thats really all you can do.

i live at post uptown place (525 w. 7th st.), which is two blocks from 5th and poplar, and much cheaper i think.

3 bedroom 1700, which is about $570 a person.

if youre going to live in charlotte, you might as well live uptown.

Anything near downtown is gonna be expensive, as that's where most of the demand is right now. I'd recommend the south side of town, near Ballentine. Some of the houses and apartments around that area (not in Ballentine) are getting older and not quite so expensive. Lowest crime in that area, and still plenty to do.

Do you know in Charlotte you're working? Location I mean. If you're close to 485, most places aren't too bad of a drive, so you have a lot of options on where to live.

Fifth & Poplar is convenient to resturants, bars, and has a HT downstairs. They are nice for apartments; however, I would never look at buying (they are transitioning to condos). They are nothing I would want to put my money in for the long run. As mentioned earlier, look at the post properties.

Anything in uptown, dilworth, southend, and wesley heights (a neighborhood) will be centrally located and will be populated by people our age or slightly older.


Don't live in ballantyne, unless you like living around only families and driving everywhere. I really hate ballantyne with a passion.

You can get to where you work from the south side of town on 485 in less than 30 minutes. So don't rule out places that are across town if they are near the beltline.

485 is an easy drive, no traffic jams, I used to take it to the UNCC area from Matthews every day for work.

uptown is going up fast, but it is still fairly affordable to rent. i do live in wesley heights, its a small neighborhood just west of 77, and it would be about a 10-15 minute commute for you

i like living in a house/townhouse rather than somewhere like post gateway (where i lived for a year). i guess i didn't like having to walk down a hall to get outside, feels too much like a hotel.

I live up around Huntersville, paying ~$750 for a 2br. It's cheap up there. Traffic on I-77 into downtown in the morning and back up in the afternoon SUCKS though. Luckily, I work ~1 mile away from my apt

The university area is pretty affordable too, and very conveniently located (close to both I-77 and I-85).

If you want to live downtown, look in the Dilworth and NoDa area. I work in charlotte, but commute about 30 minutes to get there. Those areas are nice though, very close to downtown adn have some historic aspect to it.

if that link works... try districts 1, 2, 3, 4. Avoid 6 at all costs. And 7 is as downtown as you get, that would be expensive. Not sure about 5... there's always lots of traffic and construction down that way.

Do you mean "if you want to live near downtown"? Because, dilworth is an inner ring burb, and noda is an old mill village.

NoDa will be cheap and it's a fun artist centered community. In Dilworth, you will be paying comparable rent to uptown; however, it is nice.

Try Olmsted Park. It's currently condos, but they're still selling them and you can usually find people leasing them.

That's where I am.

It's in Southend, which is pretty much between Dilworth and Wesley Heights.

If that doesnt work there are a lot of houses around the area for rent also.

Other than that, good advice here. Try just South or North of Uptown...if you go East or West too much you get into ghetto fast. Noda, Dilworth, Southend, etc. Try to get on the edges of these communities and you'll be fine and get a cheap place.

I live here currently (see first link, lease ends in June). I've lived here since April of 2006. It's a fair place. It's dirt cheap ($1069, 3bd/2 ba, w/ garage). If you work on Tyvola near 77, it's literally less than a 5 minute commute. We've had our fair share of car break in's. One guy did about 11 in a 3 day span. See Garage though. For the most part it's ok. There is a strong mix of whites, blacks, and hispanics. It's about a 12 minute drive from from downtown. All three interstates are fairly accessable as well. YOu can also try out that second link, they are across the street. Same type deal, but I think a little nicer (sans the paint job). It's good that you want to keep commute to a minimum. You will come to love it and take it for granted. Hope this can help.

this is the company that owns that complex. they seem to have lots around the area, and most that aren't directly downtown have good prices. i dont know anything about them, but they look decent from the first glance.

as far as i'm concerned, dilworth and noda are pretty much dowtown. you dont have to be within I-277 to be downtown really. I mean, if you're within a 5 minute drive, whats the difference? Maybe I see it like that since I drive 30 minutes to get to work downtown...?

I lived at Piper Station in S. Charlotte for a year and a half. They were really nice apts with a nice gym/pool and great floorplans. I paid $680 for a 1-bedroom (2001), and would expect them to be closer to $750 now. It's located on Rea Rd off the 485 loop right by Ballantyne Commons Pkwy and across the street from the plaza Stonecrest, complete with Target, Harris Teeter, movies, and at least a dozen eateries ranging from Wendy's and Chik-fil-A to a great steakhouse in Firebird's.

the difference is a lot--zoning and allowance for a walkable neighborhood. Living in uptown (except for her) allows for almost carless living. This will grow in the next few years--much more infill developement in the works and light rail. Southend, dilworth, and noda are pretty walkable, but not truely "urban."

i live right near tyvola and tryon (at the corner of beam and shopton) there are 2 apt complexes here Carrington Place (which i live in and is nice and fairly cheap, but is becoming more "ethnic") and Courtney Oaks which looks a lot nicer though i havent been in there. rent for our 3 bedroom is 1095 i think. i work near downtown and it takes me about 20 min to get there which includes traffic just fyi

As far as the post properties (http://www.postproperties.com), try out post gateway over post uptown, its another block down, but doesn't look like a mental institution on the inside....

also, not sure if someoned mentioned, The Arbors (sp?) is within walking distance, and cheap, fairly nice, but a bit old.....you get what you pay for

but check into buying....a $1800 mortgage will buy you quite a condo or house....I know fifth and poplar is running a special and they'll pay the first 6 months of your mortgage (principal and interest), and home owners fees (which are like $300+/month!)
