i'm having some trouble setting my laptop up to connect to the internet through my cell phone.

the phone in question is a sprint/nextel ic502. i have motorola phone tools 4 and have been trying to set it up through that. i have a data plan, and can browse just fine on the phone itself.

after going through the connection wizard, this is the error i'm getting:

Quote :
"The CDMA connection could not be established, make sure that you have suscribed to the DATA option and that the GPRS network is accessible. Contact your (Sprint) service provider for more details."

any ideas? my googling hasn't turned up anything. neither has howard forums.

That might help, though I have no positive or negative experience with Sprint.

yeah, well that's obvious.

i guess i should have mentioned i did call sprint, and the only thing the tech support guy could come up with was a broadband plan for another 39.99 a month.

i'm not trying to use this as my regular connection or anything, i just want something cheap for when i'm traveling.

i could have sworn you can do this with no additional charges as long as you have a data plan.

On Alltel you can get 1X service for just the cost of airtime. Its about 90kbps (theoretical max 144). But you have to call and request that "Packet Data" be enabled on your phone.

So do you see any kind of tx/rx or anything going on the cellphone lcd while it tries to connect. Or does it immediately fail?

when i first started messing with it, it would say "connecting". after playing around with it some and manually creating a new modem connection, i could get a "modem mode" screen on the phone but it would still give the same error on the laptop.

it appears that it may be a hopeless cause from my searching. sprint has shut down any tethering unless you have a phone as modem plan, which is pretty much the same price as the broadband plan. apparently it's a result of people taking advantage of the high speed network. you can still get by with it on new samsung phones by disabling the nai in a "secret" menu, but i haven't found any way to do it with a motorola.

fwiw, this phone is basically the same as a v323. just has the iDEN walkie talkie/direct connect added on.

You're right - that sounds more like the server is actively refusing. In the absence of any hacks, there isn't much you can do
