so i installed xp home(which means i had a serial number)...well now i'm messing around and i get some "30 days to activate" message...it says that after 30 days if i dont activate it i wont be able to use it...

anyone know how to get rid of this? i installed xp home which means i had a serial number so i dont know why its bugging me, etc...its quite a nuisance...please help if u can

you can get a serial from almost anywhere if you download it illegally. it doesn't mean that it's yours

you have to activate XP. No way around it unless you try the registry tricks out there but then you can't get the patches.

it takes all of 3 seconds...if you have the serial number.

and since you have to active RIGHT after you install... you should still have it.

so i found out tonight that if u change a motherboard and use the same harddrive u dont need to reinstall windows xp

wrong. if it worked for you, it's because the motherboard had the same chipset.

hmmm that might be true...i installed it on a 1.15ghz athlon and put in a 1.25 athlon motherboard after that

just changed the date(it was like set on 2000)

it immediately came up and said the 30 days was up

i dont get if it lets me install why it needs to activate anyway...

because activation proves that you installed it with a legitimate serial number.

its def. legit...after i put it in, it proceeded to install

tried tinyxp...didnt work

trying xp pro right now...i raided my parents software cabinet

aka legit being that you didn't borrow your roommates serial number and install it on your computer too. They look at your hardware config and if it changes a lot the next time you install you have to call in.

They've recently gotten a lot more lax on it. This was all on slashdot a while ago.

Just tell them your old PC got struck by lightning and you built a whole new one. They will give you the activation code.

welp, thanks for the help guys- got the "activate" message away...finally downloaded ie7 and wmp 11...finally got service pack 2

took like 3 hours to download sp2 yesterday...finally installed this morning...had 89 updates to install after rebooting from the sp2 upgrade

thanks to all yalls help...without you i may still have this "genuine" popup
