^ that's a moot point, because the elise or the 997 would also be far more expensive in the europe/uk than in the US.
you can't usually choose where you live.
cars in the UK are typically 1.5-1.6 times that of the prices in the US.
the newly released M3 coupe has been priced at an equivalent of about USD 101,300 in the UK 4/25/2007 5:51:38 PM |

its not moot...my point is if i was going to spend $59,000 on a car it wouldn't be an evo. And i live in the US...so my point is in regards to where i live. If i ever move to Europe, i'm shipping my Evo as my brother did with his car. A lot cheaper than buying one over there. (one meaning any car)4/25/2007 6:05:45 PM |

Aren't BMW's and Porsches actually a lot cheaper in Germany though? If you lived in Europe, you'd probably be dumb to not go to Germany and buy it. 4/25/2007 6:13:15 PM |

^^ ok, but europeans who have lived in europe forever can't just come to the US to buy a car and ship it back home.
if a european wants to buy an EVO, it is going to cost him 60 large USD, that's it, he can't do anything about it. if he can only afford to spend USD 40,000, well that will get him something that costs about USD 25,000 in the US. 4/25/2007 6:24:02 PM |

why not? i know u.s. bmw owners do such a thing frequently (fly to germany, buy, ship home).4/25/2007 6:30:31 PM |

i mean, enthusiasts can, but not your typical family-man, who has a gazillion other things to worry about.
ok, this is about an enthusiast car, so i see the point, fair enough.
but i would have thought there would be laws against this. are you saying a british dude who wants to buy a Lexus GS 450h can simply fly to the US, buy it there, and then ship it back to the UK to save money?
i would imagine there would be some laws against that (if you are solely doing it to save money and travelling soley for buying the car, or at least some hefty fees.
as an aside, here are the prices of the Lexus GS 450h in the UK and the US respectively.
USD 76,208
USD 55,615 4/25/2007 6:39:00 PM |

it can be done...smart people who want exactly what they want in a german car would fly to the factory and have it custom right down to the color of the carpet and the wheels that they want...unlike US dealerships that think its against the laws of nature to get a car exactly the way you want it. 4/25/2007 6:52:17 PM |

there are customs fees and oftentimes those will pretty much cancel out any savings you would get from buying a car overseas.
for this very same reason cars the go into eastern europe are often dissassembled severely, shipped over as parts and assemebled back together to avoid gettin hit by customs fees. labor on the other hand is cheap over there 4/25/2007 6:58:48 PM |

why would you want to chose every color thats inside an evo?
unless "replace entire interior reflective of what i paid for" is an option, it wouldnt be worth your time. 4/25/2007 6:59:34 PM |

Why do you always have to try and find some smart remark to make about Evos or anything else garage related? We are talking about customizing german cars. read the whole thread.4/25/2007 7:22:30 PM |

part of the reason their cars cost more is that their gas costs more and they don't have room for everyone to drive so they must make it a luxury not all can afford. 4/27/2007 8:40:46 AM |

not $20,000+ worth of options. Automatic Climate control being one of them is not that big of a step up in cost.
AYC - Active Yaw Control being another 'standard' option in non-US spec Lancer Evo's being another difference that doesn't cost that much more.

Quote : | "Every so often, The Economist (a British political weekly) prints what it calls “The Big Mac Index”. As its title alludes, the index shows the relative dollar value of a McDonald’s hamburger purchased in different countries ‘round the world as a gauge of both living costs and the relative strength of currencies.
Well, ladies and gentlemen, not to be outdone Automobiles de Luxe will now every so often publish what we shall call “The Phantom Index” to gauge the relative cost of Rolls-Royces in other countries. Keep in mind that the following prices (quoted from RR) reflect basic MSRPs and do not include taxes and delivery fees. And exchange rates reflect Wednesday’s (4/25/07) Bloomberg market data.
United States > $333,350 United Kingdom > $440,620 (£219,975) Eurozone Member-States > $447,342 (€328,000) Canada > $386,224 (CAD$432,100) Japan > $350,872 (¥41,650,000)
Intriguing to note that the Eurozone is the priciest market (in currency terms) to purchase a new Phantom and that America is the cheapest.
God Bless America. Buy your Rolls here. " |
