WASHINGTON--Authorities dropped charges yesterday against an aide to Virginia Sen. Jim Webb who carried a loaded gun into the U.S. Capitol complex.
"After reviewing and analyzing all of the evidence in the case, we do not believe the essential elements of the crime of carrying a pistol without a license can be proved beyond a reasonable doubt," said U.S. Attorney Jeff Taylor, top prosecutor in the District of Columbia.
Webb senior aide Phillip Thompson, 45, of Stafford County, was arrested on March 26 after Capitol Police spotted the loaded pistol and two other loaded magazines in a briefcase being scanned by an X-ray machine at the entrance of the Russell Senate office building.
Thompson told the officer at the building's entrance that the weapon belonged to Webb.
The senator said later he did not give Thompson the gun but refused to say whether it was his. Webb told reporters Thompson had carried the gun into the building "completely inadvertently."
District of Columbia law prohibits carrying a handgun or concealed weapon without a license.

What???
Apparantly a new loophole in the Conceal Carry law. You can go anywhere you want with a pistol, if you get caught...simply refuse to admit ownership and go on your merry way.

Was that really their reasoning? I have serious doubts that this would be a valid defense. Every (legal) handgun in this country is cataloged and tracked, so all they have to do is look at the serial number(s) and determine if that gun is registered to you. But that's an entirely moot point because if the law says you can't carry into a certain place, then it's irrelevant whether or not the weapon is registered to you.4/29/2007 12:37:56 PM |

I love the title of this thread.
It makes it seem like this is a partisan issue. Nothing that happened relates to Dems or Republicans. Regardless of who did what, this is an issue where being a Senator gets you a little more leeway than an average person.
Of course this has to be a Democrat-Republican issue, though, right? This is the shit that prevents people from finding common ground on issues. A culture of one side versus the other is so pervasive on everything that you can't see it any other way. 4/29/2007 2:36:15 PM |

^ Yes Senators are more equal than others.
So Why doesn't Pelosi shut up already about the republicans having a monopoly on the culture of corruption when her party is just as bad. She is the one trying to make the case that one party is behind all the trouble. She casts stones at the Duke Cunninghams while ignoring the William Jeffersons. 4/30/2007 12:45:19 AM |
