I was always under the impression that silver surfer was ONLY a scout/messenger for Galactus...I'm not sure if I like them making him the sole bad guy

First one was too campy when I first saw it. When I got over that and took it with a grain of salt, it was at least entertaining. The only gripe I have with this one is they've made Silver Surfer a little pansy.

They'll probably have Silver Surfer as the main bad guy for 90 minutes and throw in a 5 minute "Galactus in the background" scene at the very end.

The first FF4 movie was really weak. I basically see this as an opportunity to drag silver surfer and galactus into the realm of lame. Not that making a Galactus story line into a movie is easy to do in a plausible way, but FF4 is like a black hole and it's pulling other comic book heroes into inescapable suck oblivion. At least for 10-15 years, like the Batman and Superman franchises.

just found out this movie is like an hour and a half long....
usually a bad sign when anything that isn't either a cartoon or a horror movie isn't even over 100 minutes

^well, that usually means that they made it short to save money, and on top of that, it means it isn't going to make a lot of money based on word of mouth and is going to try and make up by having atleast 5 showtimes per print, in an effort to sell more tickets. basically it couldn't be long like pirates... with only 3 showings per print and sell out enough auditoriums to make money.

that's just what I've noticed working at theaters. you could talk all day about how lame and simple a plot must be to work in under 100 minutes...which is why usually only childrens movies and horror movies (usually the pg13 ones) try to get away with it.

runtime 92 minutes... 8 short of your 100 minimum...

anyway, they can't exactly make this a long movie, for one thing people won't sit for it. overall people didn't like the first F4 movie so they're not going to sit for a longer movie for a franchise that had a bad begining.

beyond that, it's really not that long of a story if they're mainly going to focus on the Silver Surfer and have Galactus appear last... fighting Galactus SHOULD be an entire move in and of itself, so i wouldn't be surprised at all if they're setting up for a sequel... if that's the case then an hour and a half for SS and an hour and a half for Galactus makes sense to me...

gah, i can't believe i just defended an F4 movie, but hey, maybe this one won't be as bad as everyone said the first one was (maybe, it's possible, i suppose)

eh, it really doesn't look like he's having long drawn out fights.

His chase with Johnny, doesn't fight him, just grabs him and throws him away

With the rocket launchers, its kinda like he's just swatting them aside

now I can't believe I'm defending this shitty movie...

ok... they don't know a lot about the silver surfer. they don't have wikipedia.
but they have noticed that wherever this thing goes, a few days later planets die/disappear, whatever. so they are under the impression that the silver surfer is responsible for all that destruction.

I mean, it pretty much shows that in the trailer.

he is basically the slave of galactus. galactus eats planets. and when he came up to silver surfers planet, the silver surfer begged him not to. they made a deal. galactus leaves his planet alone, but the silver surfer must seek out other planets for him to consume. he also gave the silver surfer a lot of his powers i believe. ohh, and a lot of the time the silver surfer tries to keep away from planets with intelligent life, or warn in atleast.

galactus basically forces him to stay on earth AFTER he finds out that the silver surfer betrays him to help earth.

it wasn't the deal that they originally made that got him stuck on earth

Quote :
"The Surfer served Galactus well for many years, enjoying exploring the wonders of the universe; however, it became increasingly difficult for Radd to find energy-rich worlds devoid of sentient life. Over time, Galactus subtly altered the Surfer's mind, submerging Radd's emotions and repressing past memories. As a result, the Surfer became much more willing to lead Galactus to inhabited worlds, such as Earth. Locating Earth despite Uatu The Watcher's covert attempts to ward him off, the Surfer caused widespread panic and fought the Fantastic Four. During this conflict, the Surfer met blind sculptress Alicia Masters, who sensed his inner nobility and pleaded with him to spare humanity. His long-dormant emotions stirred by what Alicia taught him of beauty and spirit, the Surfer turned on Galactus and helped fight him off long enough for Uatu and the Fantastic Four to secure the Ultimate Nullifier: a cosmic doomsday weapon which forced Galactus to withdraw. However, Galactus punished the Surfer by trapping him on Earth, erecting an energy barrier around the planet that was uniquely attuned to the Surfer."

So the movie wants us to believe that they were able to assess that a 6 foot tall silver dude showed up and a few days later the planet died/disappeared but then they didn't notice Galactus (slightly larger than SS) showing up and wreaking havoc while the planet was dying/disappearing.

Yeah, I know. It's a crappy movie.

Oh, I agree. I'm just saying that suspension of belief only goes but so far. You'd expect a movie to work within the rules it sets up for itself, however absurd.

^^ From what I've heard about the movie and seen from the trailers, everything seems pretty loyal to the comics. The F4 didn't realize that Silver Surfer was just a puppet until he told them. So they saw Silver Surfer as the reason all these planets died and attacked him to stop him. Silver Surfer retaliated and there was an entire arch of them just fighting. Then they had a little pow wow and straightened shit out. The viewers are going to see SS as evil just as the F4 did until they find out about Galactus.

Laurence Fishburne is the voice of SS for those that don't know.

Seeing this thread made me remember that and I ctrl+f'd and couldn't believe it hadn't been mentioned.

maybe my ctrl F is broken or people just don't care.

apparently another guy did the whole movie and the actor based his movements off that guy's voice, and then they were like "nahhhhhh lets go w/ morpheus."

Yup...

Doug Jones did the acting for the silver surfer. He is the same guy that was the faun and "pale man" in pan's labyrinth.

he does this kind of "character acting" or whatever it's called all the time, kind of like Andy Serkis did as Gollum or King Kong

Doug Jones does some really good work too. he was Abe Sabien (the fish guy) in hell boy. The guy who voiced him (David Hyde Pierce) refused to be credited in the movie because he believed that Jones made the character come alive and that it was his character.

After a bit of digging:

Quote :
"[Beginning spoilers!] Just how did they pull off the gigantic King Kong-sized planet-devouring behemoth that is Galactus from the comic books? Well, they didn’t. Galactus doesn’t have a single line of dialogue in the movie and simply appears at the end of the movie as a planet-sized dust storm. Yup, you read that right. They should have called him Twistus instead because he appears as a left-over special effect from Twister. Not only do they completely ignore the character as he (it?) appeared in the comics, but the Silver Surfer so easily defeats Galactus that it is almost insulting. No wonder the writers went to the trouble of bringing back Dr Doom as a villain for a subplot because they simply had no idea what to do with Galactus himself. (In this particular daft subplot Dr Doom steals the Surfer’s galactic surfboard — yeah, you read that right too.) [End spoilers!]"
