So here's the situation... I've been dating this girl for only 2 and 1/2 months and she has a birthday coming up next Wednesday. I don't want to get her anything too serious (jewerly, etc.) but don't want to get her anything shitty either. She loves Tim McGraw and I considered getting her tickets to his concert in July...but it's like 50 bucks a ticket for the crappiest seats there... pretty expensive. She also likes sports so maybe something dealing with that?? I was just wondering if anybody has any ideas on what to get her and/or do for her?
I'm not used to this whole "girlfriend" thing so any help would be greatly appreciated
oh yeah, I'm 23 and she's 28. if that means anything 5/4/2007 12:29:34 AM |

the concert would be a good idea considering you're only 2.5 months into it. it sucks that they're too expensive.
that would be something fun and memorable but "not too serious" 5/4/2007 1:40:25 AM |

I'd try for the concert too. If that's too much and she likes sports, there's always a Canes game, baseball game, or the new soccer team.
Then too, you might just take her out shopping for an evening or something. 5/4/2007 1:56:09 AM |

Yeah, if you did a nice dinner or decent dinner and a movie you'd probably spend that much anyways - just do the concert. 5/4/2007 9:55:39 AM |

Durham Bulls games are really fun too, and you could either eat there ($1 hot dogs, fries, and popcorn on thursdays) or there's Mellow Mushroom right there at the stadium. My boyfriend and I go every couple weeks or so, and I love it 5/4/2007 10:34:33 AM |

concert is a terrible idea because if youre not heading to poundtown still in july, youre going to feel dumb for wasting money...it's way too early for advance scheduling 5/4/2007 11:16:28 AM |

I took mine on a camping trip in the mountains, this was like a month after we started dating, so I had to keep it on the cheap.

Well if shes 28 she probably has a normal full time job, and I assume your just graduating or about to graduate, logically for most people guys it'd be the thought that counts most in whatever you choose, since you're probably not financially very well off compared to her. Without knowing anything else, imho I'd take her to the concert or dinner somewhere really nice. 5/4/2007 7:02:06 PM |

concert is the right one. if you think $100 for a girlfriends birthday is too expensive.....
that's what a 28 y/o expects for a typical dinner/drinks date. You are getting off cheap for $100 but not looking like a cheapskate because its a fun & thoughtful gift.
mootduff brings up a very valid point though. I wouldnt stash those puppies away and then in July if she dumps you cry and tell her you were planning on taking her to the concert.
Get the tickets now, wrap them up in a box and go on a dinner date this weekend. Give her sufficient alcohol (wine for best results) and just tell her you were excited about the gift and wanted to give them to her now so y'all could make plans to go. You are 50/50 to get her naked on the ride home from dinner.

If you REALLY wanna suprise her, get her one rose and a nice card. Tell her "I'm really sorry I didn't know what to get you." Give her said rose and card. Keep her on the hook for maybe 15 minutes or so going on about how you suck at birthday gifts and all. Then say "Oh, I almost forgot, I picked these up too," and give her the tickets. 5/6/2007 10:29:30 PM |

Make her something. I made my past girlfiend a nice jewelry box out of rosewood and she loved it. jewelry boxes are easy because you can use scrap expensive wood from like a cabinet maker.
Oh, yeah, and if she doesnt really like the jewelery box, cut a hole in it, then put your junk in the box. 5/6/2007 11:27:39 PM |

i think i'm actually gonna ditch the concert tickets. it was a good idea, but i looked up the tickets and the ONLY tickets left in the place are nosebleeds.
i think what i'm gonna do is stay on the tickets side and get her some tickets to this wine festival in a few weeks. the tickets aren't priced that badly and there's gonna be live music, food, and of course all the alcohol we can handle. we can do the whole picnic thing too. so i think she'd like something like that
i can't decide if i should get her a massage from a spa too or just go with the tickets. don't wanna over do it but definitely don't want to under-do it

Dude you are making a mistake here.
Get her at least a $100 massage package if you turn down the concert.
Honestly, I'm continually amazed how cheap the majority of kids are these days. It's commonplace for me to spend $100 on a first date of dinner/drinks and usually within the next 1-2 weeks i spring for a lunch/massage date.
Allow me to give you a life lesson for free. If you pay for pussy up front not only will you get it in the present, you'll get it in the future when she remembers how much potential you have to be a baller.
Also, i guarantee your girlfriend has some friends that are hotter than her. She will go brag to them "well your b/f may be really hot but look what my b/f did". Those hot ass bitches are going to want that treatment too if you ever break up because they are used to dating scumbag hot guys who never gave them anything.
I know right now you're thinking "mine is the one!!!" but that is the dumbest mindset you can possibly have. Maybe she is and if she is good for you. But what if shes not? Shouldnt you have a contingency plan?
$100 for your girlfriend might be a "bad" investment but it certainly isn't a sunk cost. Nothing makes it easier to score a hot piece of ass than a thumbs up recommendation from a girlfriend.

Don't give her anything. Tell her that you're saving for retirement, so you both can live in comfort when you get older. Explain that "comfort" means expensive hookers, since she will no longer be desirable. 5/8/2007 9:00:35 AM |

my now-husband spent so much $$ on my birthday one year... i was soooo mad such a waste of money for one lousy birthday.
i would have been just as happy with the other ideas here: a 60 minute massage, short beach trip at a roach motel, local symphony concert.
point to consider: girls typically want your time and attention - not expensive 5/8/2007 4:18:55 PM |
