beaufort grocery is mainly great seafood prepared in an inventive way: it's not your typical 42nd st oyster bar, its much more contemporary. A typical entree will be $20+ there, plus drinks and whatnot.
Clawsons is in Beaufort and is alright, but still a bit pricey. Just don't go the Sanitary in Morehead, it's probably the most overhyped restaraunt in NC.
During the day look into going to Cape Lookout lighthouse, only accessible by ferry. You can do a daytrip there, as it has a picnic area and beach. There is also shackleford banks and Fort Macon. 5/14/2007 10:42:11 AM |

yep, drive down to harkers island
stop at Calico Jacks Hotel, take the ferry across to the lighthouse
you'll get to see the wild horses and pick up some crazy shells along the beach 5/14/2007 11:16:45 AM |

You want somewhere really nice to go, check out Aqua ( http://aquaexperience.com/ ) - by far the best restaurant in Beaufort/Morehead City area. 5/14/2007 10:10:15 PM |

I'm a big fan of Amos Mosquito's for a restraunt/bar scene.
Beaufort is overrated and pricey from a tourist standpoint IMO but I spent a lot of my childhood there so i guess its just not a big deal to me anymore. Parking sucks too.
Atlantic Beach bars are just a little too saturated with Marines and locals for my tastes and the Beaufort area is mostly old people unless theres a big tournament in town.
The aquarium is a nice place to visit with a girl.
If you're on a budget id go more for the siteseeing and avoid the waterfront restraunts for dinner. 5/15/2007 1:52:15 AM |

Definately jump on 70 and drive up towards Harkers Island, Cedar Island, etc. That area isn't as developed and it'll give you a chance to see it more like it would have been back in the day. It won't be that way forever, so I highly suggest checking it out while you can.
There are a lot of good restaurants on the waterfront in Beaufort. You can spend a few hours by going to the maritime museum, checking out the shops, watching the boats come in, grabbing some dinner, and enjoying the waterfront at night with a few drinks.
Fort Macon is good for a couple of hours of entertainment.
I have heard there is a good public hiking trail on the mainland just south of the bridge that crosses onto Emeral Isle. I'm planning to check that out when I go in a few weeks.
There are some good spots to explor and photo opportunities on Radio Island (the little hop between Morehead City and Beaufort.)

if you go to emerald isle for dinner,
hit tortugas or catherine's bistro
the people who own catherine's opened another joint closer to the bridge thats not bad either

the beach tavern in atlantic beach is where everyone from foster's/five points goes when at the beach, if you are in to that sort of thing
but only drinking
beaufort grocery is one of the only good options for dinner

clawsons sucks and has for a long time. there is far better food to be found down there for cheaper or the same price.
the cemetery really is cool. don't knock it til you've tried it. the restaurant at town creek marina used to be really good, although it's changed hands now and i haven't eaten there in a while, but i heard it's better. i forgot the name of the place now. windsomething maybe...
^^tortugas no longer exists, fyi. it's now a sports bar/grill. katherine's is the shit, but it's expensive. a lot of the folks that used to work at tortugas left to work at katherine's when it first opened, then the food at tortugas started sucking, so it lost money.
i've heard (from my parents) that the new italian place near the bridge sucks in terms of seafood. they used a lot of frozen fish. if you want some good oysters and plain ol' fried seafood, go to jordan's.

I'm a big fan of the channel marker right as you enter AB. A little pricey but I'd recommend it for your "one nice dinner". downtown beaufort is pretty cool and your girl would like it. shit's expensive but it's a nice area.
the EI/AB area is great. definitely my favorite beach location.
don't eat at the dairy queen near the bogue pier, ive been there two times and each time i've been , myself and everyone i was with have gotten struck down minutes after leaving there.
hope the weather is nice. we were down there last weekend and it was cold and windy as hell.
we also went to the Emerald Club one night... good crowd. good live music, nice outside area. no smoking though.
i've heard lots of good things about the Watermark restuarant as well as someone above mentioned.
have fun

I hadn't eaten at the Sanitary until many years after I had seen all the soristisluts and frat stars wearing the shirts, and I wouldn't call it overhyped, well, mainly because I don't think it was hyped in the first place.
I think it's pretty sweet that you are right there on the water, the fried food is tasty, and they give you a shit ton of it. I'm not quite sure how I could see all those people wearing their shirts, still not really knowing anything about the restaurant, and call it overhyped.
Your perception of it must be a little warped. 5/27/2007 10:57:23 PM |

it might have already been mentioned ... but there's a place on the mainland in an old, tall, dingy looking building that's great. If you get off the bridge coming from atlantic beach and take a right, it's right down that way. Damn good ribs. Wish I could think of the damn name. 5/28/2007 10:13:46 AM |
