My hound and i have typically always had a roommate with a dog or some other dog in the house.
I think she misses having someone to play with and someone to compete with when i play with them.
I know my pet expenses will go up but are there any other downsides to having a second dog.

In my experience it depends on the dog. Your's obviously sound social. My roommates cat was extremely destructive until I got another cat. I chose the opposite sex just to ensure they would get along (doesn't always work but it helps). Just try to pick one with the same energy level!

Well the picture you sent me last night is an absolute beautiful dog.

And even though she's social--I remember a certain female dog that when in the same territory they kind of snipped at each other
Take her with you when you go see the new dog, see how the first meeting is.

My brother and s-i-l just got another female pup and it took a few weeks smoothing things over, but its working out. When the new female, Kayla, and Sabrina get together Tirra plays fun police though (She's such an old lady ). But Sabrina was very weary of Kayla at first, and she drooled a lot.

If I got a new dog though, I'd probably get a male...Sabrina is such a beta female that an alpha around the house all the time (other than me or Tirra, HA!) would muzzle her personality. And every male dog I've every introduced her to they were immediate pals.

In my experience - females have a harder time getting along with other females

opposite sex is best.
But if both dogs are submissive or one is and the other isn't it should work out.

^both rural shelters with low adoption rates. I see alot of hounds at these shelters. They aren't vet checked.
www.bfpa.org- local rescue org that has a lot of dogs and puppies for adoption. very detailed description of the animal and pictures on website. I sometimes foster for them and they're an awesome organization

I had a very energetic female that would drive me crazy pushing toys in my face all the time to play with her. I ended up getting another boy who is really calm and submissive. They have gotten along great from the beginning. Also had him fixed right away so he never pissed or humped or barked excessively. Hell, now I catch my female humping the male every now and then.

we adopted a brittany as a companion for our boxer who wasn't coping well with my wife working 80-100 hours a week. They're part of the pointer family and ours has been a great dog, even though she was a rescue.

Yeah my coonhound was a rescue too.
i dunno she is an attn. whore and i don't know if another dogs attention would make it better or worse..


ohh and krissy makes 0 mess so 2x0=0 but i know that could change.

She is pretty but i'm looking more for a short haired dog.
Pretty much i want another krissy lou but different colors are preferred.
I really need to find a local shelter and just do what i did with krissy, play with the dog for a while and see if it likes me.

Franklin county has a purebred black&white border collie pup. about 3 months old. looks very healthy. gorgeous dog. male. this breed has a lot of energy and is intelligent (easy to train) and will tire your dog out. Nevermind - they have long hair


they also have a young hound mix, a pretty shep/husky mix, a purebred (?) german shep female, and a bunch of adult dogs. and some kittens

She looks like your dog^ young enough to really start training but past the annoying needy puppy phase. She will only have a few days before they put her down. The shelter is about a 30 min drive from Raleigh. They'll let you see her and play with her and its free to adopt there.

when our first puppy became destructive with us, we got a 2nd dog and it worked out great. first was a female and 2nd was a male and the first is definitely the alpha dog, all 16 lbs of her, and she bosses around my lab, the baby- all 80 lbs of him. it was probably the best thing we could've done for her

when i started working full time i got my female dog another female puppy to play with during the day. they absolutely LOVE each other and do everything together. my brother did the same w/ 2 male dogs. they don't have to be opposite sex for it to work. the only problem we had was eating out of their own bowls (mia is food aggressive towards dogs only). i let mia snap at suki once and everything was fine after that.

I would be VERY cautious putting 2 females together. I do rescue and the only time we will place a female with another female is if it is 1-a multi dog pack that already has both sexes or 2- the 2 females are different ages (big gap between ages).

Many people are unaware of female/female aggression or have had a case where it worked so don't see a problem, but in MOST cases females of the same age (spayed or not) will fight. Females will fight with dangerous outcomes too. Most trainers and behavioralist will tell you that unlike males, females will fight to kill the other dog. I have heard horror stories about people who have experience with packs and are very knowledgeable about dogs and still have trouble with multi-female packs. Like I said before, usually the females fighting are close in age. Like XCchik said, you can also have a submissive female with a dominant female, but you don't really know a dog's true personality (submissive vs dominant) until they have reached maturity which for most dogs is ~2ish.


Gretchen is a very nice looking dog. Hopefully you will not have any problems.

Lou dog is coming up on 4yrs old now and gret is 10 months so i'm hoping lou will be a mom and avoid the confrontations.

typically Krissy gets along better with females than males but i'm still nervous about her living with one.

It is important that you introduce the dogs in neutral territory.
definitely not your house or yard. a park or dog park (non-peak hours)

as Odie said - females are tough. good luck.

My female gets along fine with puppies (male or female) but she does NOT tolerate other adult females. My roommate has a female border collie that has grown up here. Luckily the border collie is submissive so they do okay. In fact all 3 of my dogs have dominant personalities but they somehow get along just fine.

Make sure the dogs understand that you are the pack leader, that you're the boss.

my female only has issues with dogs smaller than her. before i realize the correlation, i got a male scotty as a companion for her (he was years older too), but had to take the damn thing back she was so aggressive torwards him.

she gets along great with any male or female as long as it's her size or bigger. she does fine with cats too, which are always smaller than her. wierdo.
