I have not tried turning it on or anything yet and have just been letting it dry out.

oh shit

your first post and title are misleading!!! if it had just gone "for a swim", i think an ipod would be fine after that.

but it didn't go for a "swim", it got caught in a concentrated KATRINA without any case/protection.

i would say it is fucked.

let it dry out for a week or 2. try turning it on. if it didn't come on in the process, it might be ok as long as you let it completely dry out.

Which kind of iPod?

If it's a Nano, it's salvageable, if it's a regular one, it's very likely dead.

I would put it in the oven at about 110 degrees farenheit or so, to dry it out more quickly. And don't try turning it on for a while. If you can even take it apart, and disconnect the battery, that would be good too.

The most likely part to be damaged is the HD, if water/dirt has gotten inside, even if it dries, the dirt is going to screw you.

Yes, they make water-proof cases. However, they're about $100 too.

do a battery replacement on it for like $70

apple sends you a refurb, you send them your ipod that "does not hold a charge" (read: anything)

...

profit

not nearly as much of a scam as apple charging $300 for an MP3 player that had no way to replace the battery and the battery only lasts a year or so.

the reason that "battery swap" is an option is because of all the people that got fucked on iPOD's with worn batteries and no way to fix them.

Make sure it is completely dry first and does not show evidence of being opened.

try putting it in a bag of rice. My phone fell into the pool and I just threw it into a zip lock bad filled with rice. After sitting overnight, it worked like new. It's like rice in a salt shaker, the rice absorbs the moisture.

But I know an iPod is significantly different from a phone.
