The good weather lately has let me get out every other day this week. I'm looking to get some new disks in the next few days since mine are getting a little beat up. You guys have any recomendations?

i've been throwing my Wraith a lot lately. just recently switched to the forearm release for long drives because of the better distance and consistency. I'm happy with my Wraith but my mid disk is a Shark that doesn't glide too well. I'm thinking about switching to a Jaguar for my mid disk because of how large it is. I would also be able to give it to my girlfriend if she plays because it is designed to glide and be thrown by weaker players. 5/18/2007 12:03:01 PM |

Go DiscCraft, Innova is a bit overrated IMO
Putting with a PoleCat or Rhino (theyre very different though) also helped me a ton coming from an Aviar / Birdie 5/18/2007 12:08:39 PM |

ehh i've always used Innova but yeah I like that Pulse driver that Discraft makes. The grooved top seems like a good idea.
and of course the XS is a beast

Yeah, I meant DiscCraft drivers only. Im not very keen on their other discs....
Then again, my main drive is primarily a sidearm so that may contribute to that opinion greatly.... 5/18/2007 12:46:15 PM |

^Then (as much as I hate to admit it), you gotta play the UNC-CH course if you havent already. Oh and the homemade course out at Monceur is the best I've played in the Triangle though I havent been out that way in 6 months (not to mention swingin DB and his people are wild n crazy)....
I always play at Kaplan cause its only a mile away but I rank it the lowest by far: 1. Monceur 2. UNC-CH 3. Zebulon 4. Harris Lake 5. Cedar Hills / Millbrook 6. Kaplan / Kentwood
Oh and all of the DG courses in Charlotte blow ours away... 5/18/2007 12:59:14 PM |

I agree, Kentwood is the easiest course I've ever played, but it's fun for a quick round.
Ranking the courses in NC (that I've played):
1. Cedar Rock (Burlington) - two great, challenging courses, one wooded, one open 2. Harris Lake - really challenging from the blue tees 3. Asheville - wooded course with great elevation changes in the hole designs 4. Wilmington - decent course with a number of difficult holes 4. Chapel Hill - overall good course, can be wet and nasty sometimes, watch out for poison ivy 6. Cedar Hills - solid course, with alternating basket locations (you gotta play everything par 3) 7. Kentwood - just way too easy, few challenging holes
looking at this moncure course, I think I might have to head out there this weekend..also I've always wanted to play those Charlotte course, I hear they are tough. 5/18/2007 4:36:55 PM |

Use whatever putter feels right for you. Three from different manufacturers that I like are the soft APX (Discraft), Aviar (Innova), Wizard (Gateway).
For mid-ranges, a Shark (Innova) is a good beginner disc, although a Roc (Innova) or Buzz (Discraft) are more common choices, and superior to a Shark for better players.
Drivers are the toughest to select. The biggest danger for a beginner is throwing discs that are too heavy and/or overstable (left-turning when thrown right-hand, backhand) for your ability level. A Leopard (Innova) is a nice straight or gently right-turning disc useful for a variety of power levels. 5/18/2007 10:39:38 PM |

Renny, Hornet's Nest, and Winthrop (home of the US Disc Golf Championship, in nearby Rock Hill, SC) are all better than any of the Triangle courses.
Buckhorn (at Harris Lake Park) is the best of the local courses, and definitely worth the drive; bring the bug spray, though, because the ticks are bad this time of year. 5/19/2007 10:45:39 AM |

Anyone who goes wakeboarding into the tiny "finger" of Harris Lake that's near the disc golf course is taking their life in their own hands. The water there is no more than 5-6 feet deep, and there are a lot of fallen tree limbs in it. I've never seen anything bigger than a jon boat near any of the DG holes. 5/21/2007 7:21:15 PM |

at kentwood you could probably make it by with about 3 different discs, but more challenging courses require more options.

^^ At Harris Lake, if you go all the way to the end of the of the park road, there's a decent-sized open field, and one practice basket for putting. Cedar Hills Park has the softball field, which is always open during the daytime. The intramural fields on campus are also a good practice area. 5/22/2007 11:27:48 AM |

We played a tournament down there a few weeks ago. It took us 4-5 hours for each round on the long pads.
Also, the charlotte courses are tougher, but I wouldn't call them better out of hand. Charlotte definitely has some rough courses, but we have a nice assortment in the Raleigh area too. In terms of sheer numbers Raleigh has just as many to choose from. Between Raleigh and Charlotte you've got the disc golf capital of the east coast.

Part of the bag is so that you don't wear your discs out too quickly. Most players carry bags because they have several backups to the same disc. It can be very annoying to lose a disc and not have a replacement for it. Even worse is having to play with a disc long enough to beat in so it flies right.
Additionally, I'm sure that, if I had to, I could go out and play regular golf with maybe 4 clubs. Give me a driver, a 5-iron, a wedge, and a putter, and I'm sure I could make do. Then again I'd also get exceptionally odd looks from regular golfers...
So it is with regular disc golf players...5/29/2007 12:20:06 AM |

Actually ended up going fishing this wkend instead, so no Moncure trip happened. But im trying to try and put together a group to head out there again soon and will post it here. I did get a chance to stop by the DG course in New Bern on the way back from fishing and it was pretty cool. It runs along the Neuse river right near the "original capital of NC" downtown area..... 5/29/2007 2:28:53 PM |

nice, im from new bern and have played that course a lot..some of the holes are fun, but then there are a few holes that have no real path, you just throw it in the woods and pray it misses a bunch of trees...
the wind is also brutal since its on the river, i cant recall ever playing a round where it wasnt windy. 17 is always a fun drive when you have the wind at your back, i wanna say that hole is somewhere between 500-600 feet 5/29/2007 9:30:35 PM |

ok the replacement thing makes sense i guess. but as far as carrying 4 golf clubs, maybe i'm just playing easy courses, but i can practically throw the disc to within 20 yards of the hole on almost every tee. i can't imagine needing more than 3 discs max before the difference is negligible 5/29/2007 9:55:11 PM |

So I dont know what everyone else who has played the course thinks but I was not impressed with Castle Hayne. About all it has going for it is the length. I got lost twice trying to find the next tee. From 9 to 10 it is all the way across the parking lot without any sign posted. Oh well, probably shouldnt complain. I still had a good time.
Good job on your ace. I got my first one today on #18 at Kaplan. Had two witnesses too which made it better. 6/2/2007 8:43:46 PM |

Then you're probably talking about Kentwood (aka Kaplan). I'm shot -7 with one disc out there twice, and that was a few years ago. Try one-discing Cedar Hills, or Buckhorn, or UNC, and then you'll start having issues. If you're playing a casual round, then yeah, I'll typically pick up 3-4 discs and go play. If it's a long course I'll take an extra driver, if it's a shortie I'll have an extra putter.
Once you start playing seriously, however, players typically diversify a little more.6/3/2007 11:18:31 AM |

^ well said. also have to account for lost discs from water holes or when spring rolls around and you accidentally drive one deep into the thick brush.....
I played Moncure a few days ago for the first time in 9 months or so. Still very solid. The creek for holes 7-8 has mostly dried up, making it much easier not to lose discs and avoid the snakes. (The basket for #7 is actually suspended above the creek, so dont miss that putt) Watch out for the Pit of Doom on hole #6 though. Its still 6' deep and is always hungry for plastic... 6/3/2007 12:35:35 PM |

I played in my first official PDGA event yesterday (saturday, june 2) at the C-tier Yadkin Open at the Yadkinville Park. I entered the Advanced division and came in 10th of about 30 players. $48 payout was enough to get me a Champ TL, Champ Sidewinder, Star Wraith, and a whopping 3 minis. The event was pretty solid. CTPs on every hole for both rounds. I didn't end up with any CTPs (hole 17 on the first round, in the uphill, alt5 position, had an absolutely amazing CTP), but I was halfway satisfied with my score. 54, 56 with reposition of all of the pins between rounds (mostly to harder positions).
First round I played solidly with 2 birds, 2 bogeys and the rest straight pars. Second round started off shaky as hell. I couldn't hit a putt over 15 feet out and ended up with an OB-4 and OB-5 within the first 5 holes. I finally pulled my first birdie a whopping ten holes into the round on hole 17 (secondary long position), followed by two more birds and a final bogey on the last hole of the day.
Results: http://www.pdga.com/tournament/tournament_results.php?TournID=6627
and then today I fucking threw my Pro Classic Roc in the lake in Jefferson. Fuckity fuck fuck fuck. That was my favorite disc of all time.

I haven't officially joined the PDGA. I figure that for $50 to join, I'd have to participate in 10 PDGA events a year to recoup my investment, and I'm not gonna do that. So I'll just take my lonesome pride and keep it to myself. (But my ratings for the two rounds in Yadkinville were 947 and 943.)

#3 is pretty tough now with all the bushes in the way. Gives you like an 8 foot window to slide it in there. I've recently switched to a baseball style throw for holes that are within about 220 feet or so. You don't get the roll like you do with the forehand or the unpredictable skip like you do from the backhand. 6/12/2007 10:06:30 AM |
