cif's post included over 50 albums, several of which I would actually consider fairly well known to anyone who listens to ANY music other than MTV/radio feeds (modest mouse, NIN, shins, Bloc Party, Bright Eyes, Wilco, Of Montreal...i mean come on you dont live under a rock).

I dont understand why everyone gets their panties in a bunch. If you dont know these bands dont post, it doesnt affect you. But just so you know there is an entire world of bands all of you are ignoring by putting down all these dubbed 'circle jerk threads'....maybe you could actually take a listen to some of this stuff and then *gasp* you WOULD have heard of them and maybe find something you like!

We werent born knowing all these bands, we all found out about them through magazines, internet, friends shows, etc etc. You can too. Thats what these threads are for

I find out a lot of awesome music through different types of threads. If I see a bunch of users recommending an album, I'll probably end up checking it out. I listen to a lot of music just sitting around playing on the internet, driving in the car, exercising, walking my dog, etc.

which is why i said mostly.

i call it a circle jerk because it is called "top albums" and i come in to see about 100 albums that i and many people havent heard, which a few select users repeat on end. many times, someone might later come in to suggest something popular and get made fun of. it isnt that the albums are unknown, it is that you guys have selected about a million to sit around and congratulate each other on.

you arent making these band accessible to others by spouting off 10 or more a post in a "top album" thread. how bout picking 1 or two and actually EXPLAINING what they are and why you like them in lieu of some other bands (both popular and unpopular) in that genre.

[Edited on May 20, 2007 at 11:10 AM. Reason : and i say all of this cuz we have about 100 of these a year and they are all the same]

what about the music of 2007 thread that has countless links to download these albums in their entirety

why is it that people get so upset about this? i look on the main page of the entertainment section and see shit about rambo, transformers, warcraft, heroes, and 50 million other topics i have nothing to contribute to. If i was to let all of this bother me, wouldnt that be kind of pathetic?

we all listen to music. we can all contribute. you completely missed the point. particularly note the word "top" vs the quantity. if you just want to post albums you like, why not just keep it in that other thread? if you want to have a meaningful discussion on what makes some albums great, then feel free.

My list includes every 2007 album I have listened too. If you see an album under the 1 or 2 that means that I didn't enjoy it, hated it, disappointed, etc. If I just list 10 albums you have no perspective of what I have listened too at all this year.

The High Llamas-- Can Cladders
Andrew Bird - Armchair Apocrypha
Arcade Fire - Neon Bible
Patrick Wolf - The Magic Position
Modest Mouse - We Were Dead Before The Ship Even Sank
National - The Boxer
Shins - Wincing The Night Away
Bright Eyes - Cassadaga
Rosebuds - Night Of The Furies
The Polyphonic Spree-- The Fragile Army (I fucking LOVE this album... amazing and surprising)
Elliott Smith---New Moon
Menomena-- "Friend and Foe"
Peter Bjorn and John --- writer's block (although, technically released in 2006....got into it late last year, so I carry that one over)

I honestly cannot get into the Panda Bear stuff, although perhaps I need to give it a few more listens than I have thus far. I was never a big fan of Animal Collective anyway.... I'm trying to give them more of a chance as well, however. I just got Sung Tongs the other day and I'm giving that a shot since that seems to be the most accessible of the AC stuff.

Cif82
--- what did you think of Battles? I saw it made your list and the beats/music are great, but the chipmunk singing vocals I heard on a few of the songs persuaded me not to download it. Is it worth it?

Timbaland - Timbaland Presents Shock Value
I don't like the guy, but he's definately doing something right, he's adding a new deminsion to pop music
Freemasons - Shakedown
They're bringing back a sound that hasn't been seen since 1970's philly, and it's actually started bringing dance/house music over to to a wider US audience.
Maroon 5 - It Won't Be Soon Before Long
Unlike The Killers, Maroon 5 managed to not drop the ball on their second album.
Justice - †
Amazing album, probably not very friendly to mainstream audiences, but still an amazing album.
Bloc Party - Weekend In The City
Very versatile album with a sound that could become the new gym class heros, except not shitty.

They made a really good album, D.A.N.C.E. is an awesome song and it's the worst one on the CD imo, but they could have shit in a CD case and the bloggers would have still eaten it up.

Avett Brothers- Emotionalism. I'm really digging it lately.
Jason Collett - Prodigals

I just saw this thread now and agree with much of what has been listed. [PSA] If you have no idea who these bands are and would like to try them and other great bands at a great price, please follow this link to emusic.com and start downloading now! http://www.emusic.com/?fref=700038 [/PSA]

i know i know, i just posted a referral link, but what the heck, you get 50 free songs(as do i). But it really is a great way to introduce yourself to great music cheaply..and support the smaller bands not on big labels.

I don't know how you could ask for more from the Justice album, it's like the soundtrack to a bad 1980's movie thrown into a blender with some static and a bit of disco candy.
