If people can delude themselves about one big thing, deluding themselves about small things comes easily.

It's mostly harmless, anyway.

Even if the music can be unreasonably cheesy, you at least have a few vocalists like Jaci Velasquez around who actually have talent.

Besides which, gospel can be really fucking fun to listen to.

Some of it sucks, some of it is really good. Just like other forms of music.

If you aren't a Christian, I don't expect you to get much out of it.

yea i thought about this again recently...i came across this facebook group that was started by christians basically bashing christian music for being so lame and talentless.

and i thought they were ridiculous. it is just like any other type of music. there's plenty of amazing christian musicians out there. sure, some of the biggest bands in christian music are crappy, but obviously the same can be said of the "secular" or mainstream industry.

and also, just like any other genre or niche of music, "christian music" can be exploited. some bands get by on very little talent but sing about Jesus so they find relative fame. the same thing can be said about the hordes of talentless teeny boppers exploiting good looks, or fashion, or hardcore bands exploiting talentless breakdowns, or whatever band in whatever genre exploiting whatever.

CTA listed some great ones

You can't possibly look at "Christian music" as a single genre. That's like saying "country music" and lumping Johnny Cash and Rascall Flats as one in the same.

I can nearly promise you that if you heard Norma Jean (or similar) and you were into heavy stuff, you wouldn't gripe that it was lame.

You could consider a large majority of Sufjan's music as Christian too. Seven Swans is entirely devoted to his faith.

I was about to mention Sufjan

And Pedro the Lion

Quote :
"t is the cavalier attitude reflected by Christian rockers -- who make a living finding ways to make holy scripture fit alongside gnarly power chords -- that drives Bazan's hatred for their genre. In addition to their music being limitlessly cheesy, Bazan believes Christian rock bands are wasting their time preaching from beneath a hot spotlight when "the basic act of being creative glorifies God."

"That's where Christian rock falls apart," he said. "It turns the music and the message into crap. The message is degraded when it's made into slogans and low-level propaganda. They're attempting to reach a certain audience just like advertisers do -- and that, ultimately, degrades the art."

A more pure model, he said, would be to try to express yourself artistically, as honestly and sincerely as possible. But it's not as simple as it sounds. Artists are constantly lured by the promise of big money and always seek approval from their peers. "It would be na?ve to think you could steer clear of the forces of money and acceptance," Bazan said, intensely. "To ignore it is to let it rule you. You can only control it if you openly address it.""

Depends on who you listening...their are of course as many varieties of CM as there is any other Music. Some CM is on point and really hot. You like what you like. I myself can't figure out how people get down to Country, Pop, Bluegrass, Classical...etc...but some people get down on it and love it.

I'm a fan of all types of music...except that music that picks one line that is said pretty much throughout the song, and songs that are only about "omgah look at me Im hot and I have diamonds and cars"

Sufjan is awesome... but, other than Seven Swans and the Christmas album, I think he masks his Christianity references enough so that it's not distracting. I mean, he definitely talks about God and things of that nature, but a lot of artists do and he does so in such a fashion that it flows well within the song.

I consider myself an agnostic, but I'm not put off by the manner he discusses his faith on Michigan, Illinois, etc. (and I know many others who feel the same way). I just chalk it up to something he draws inspiration from, just as some find it in drugs or whatever.

Haha, I used to love me some MxPx back in high school.

But if you hate a particular genre of music, it's not going to be any different if the artist happens to be Christian or have Christian themes.

MxPx has gotten away from the overly christian tones - they're still there in some songs, but they're more socal punk now

In hs, this freind of mine went psycho christian. he tried to tell me how evil my music was, and gave me a chart breakdown of bands. It was comical. It would list someone like Soundgarden and list another christian band as an non-devil equivilant.

He also watched the 700 club.

I hate labels. Does this mean I listen to pagan music? Agnostic music?

I'm far from Christian, but I've had a few good friends who have put me on to some great "Christian" bands.

It's been argued that "God Only Knows" is the most beautiful pop song ever written.

If that's not a ringing endorsement for Christianity, I don't know what is.

I listen to a decent amount. Some I would openly admit is extremely cheesy. Then there is some great stuff...Sufjan to name a modern one. Cash singing classic gospel might be my favorite thing to listen to.

^x7 I didn't know Muth Math was considered any kind of "Christian band." Not that it matters, they're good as shit. Their drummer is great.

It may have been said but I think of "Christian" bands and bands who's members are Christians as two seperate kinds of entities. I'm a Christian, but I'm by no means in a Christian band.

^here i come!

mmmm yea pretty much one of the best eras for me PERSONALLY in music (i dont mean the music coming out then just as far as going to shows etc for me).

A-Types was *atrocious* imo and the new stuff.....dont even get me started (personal preference). But frailty of words and no wings to speak of i still love. i want to cover 'end of an era' sometime. i still use my 2nd aim SN which came from frailty of words
