in my add/remove programs within the control panel I have Java 5.0 runtime updates 1-11 pretty much. as well as Java 6.0 update 1. can all of the updates prior to 11 be deleted or are they all necessary to keep.

I don't think removing them is going to do anything other than remove Java altogether from your system
