Hey everyone! I'm leaving NC soon, so I figured I'd trek on over to the Outer Banks since I've never been there before. Any suggestions on what I should check out while I'm there or things I should try out? Thank you!

Something I did while down there week before last was hit up bodie, hatteras, and ocracoke lighthouses in one day. If we'd planned better, we'd have started at currituck, and gotten all of them. You can climb Ocracoke for $10. I highly recommend it.

spend at least some of your time on the 4x4 access beaches. From what I've seen, there's a parking lot you can park at and walk in if you don't have 4WD. Those beaches > the township beaches. Pea Island Wildlife refuse is very pretty.

Sunset over the sound.

You should also peruse NCs tourism site, and those of as many towns and counties as you can find, and use those as starting points.

Has anyone camped there before? I'm looking at some of the camp grounds and I was wondering if anyone out there has experience with this and where they suggest.

yes. i've looked at a couple of places online for campgrounds and they seem to vary in price and the number of sites available. I was just wondering if anyone has tried any of these out and which they seem to prefer.

We've camped once before here: http://www.visitob.com/outer_banks/tostay/stay/stay005.htm

We primarily used just the showers and fire pit so I can't speak for the other listed amenities.

If you camp elsewhere, please report back, as we intend to go camping out there repeatedly this summer. Especially if you camp in the southern outer banks.

I'm thinking about the Rodanthe, Waves, and Salvo campgrounds...just because there seem to be a lot of sites available compared to what else I have seen. I'm really hoping to beat the crowd for memorial weekend.

You also will need to make ferry reservations if you're going to go on the Ocracoke-Ceder Island boat to travel between the N. Banks & the S. Banks. For memorial day weekend, that's pretty much a requirement.

You also can camp in the Lookout seashore, but of course it's primitive.

Also, I doubt you'll be able to climb Ocracoke lighthouse. I was just there & it was not open for that. You can climb Hatteras though for $7 & it is worth it.

also, in most places, you're allowed to fish on the beach all night. So if you've got a line in the water, and happen to fall asleep in the sand...

and I want to take a rusty axe to your head, but I don't think either one is going to happen.

btw, we have an airport in Manteo. We have airfields at the Wright Brothers Memorial, in Pine Island, in Buxton, and on Ocracoke. The Norfolk to Manteo shuttles that used to run couldn't get any business, even with heavy advertising.

at the very least visit Jockey's ridge and the lighthouses.

Also if you have time, ride down, and get on the ferry to ocracoke. Good stuff.

jockey's ridge is cool. anything in the kitty hawk/jockey's ridge/nag's head area is cool.

in the souther OBX i've gone camping at Hammcocks Beach State Park. The park is the entire barrier island which is about 4 miles long and right across the inter coastal. you can take your own canoe or boat out there or use their ferry service to reach the island and the campground. the website says that the park is closed for a dredging project in the channel route to the island but they should be open by May 25. but who knows. it's a cool place to camp though

I recommend swinging by downtown Beaufort for a night of fine dining on the waterfront.
