are the nl and al like two seperate leagues like the nba and nfl. or are they more like conferences.
OR is the mlb a league with 2 conferences like afc nfc?...that just also happen to be called leagues
they have different rules which makes me think they are two seperate LEAGUES
but then they play each other now AND THE GAMES COUNT and they have lockouts together (wouldnt 2 leagues have 2 spereate players associations and drafts.) this makes me think they are CONFERENCES.
confuses the shit out of me but if i had to guess i would think they are like articles of confederation states with more rights. like you look at european union small government states seem more independant like their own nations(ie spain germany=al nl) but they still have 1 military like 1 draft/lockout but you look at us america big government aand states seem more like provinces(ie nfc acf=north carolina kansas)
from wiki
Quote : | "the National League and the American League, by means of a joint organizational structure which has existed between them since 1903. The American League operates under the Designated Hitter Rule, but the National League does not ('inter-league' game rules are determined by the home team's league). In 2000, the American and National leagues were officially disbanded as separate legal entities with all rights and functions consolidated in the commissioner's office. MLB effectively operates as a single league and as such it constitutes one of the major professional sports leagues of North America." |
still leaves unclariy makes it seem like articles of confederation or european union states.
the 1903 part is what really gives me the creepes. so for 1004 years they have still not got it together and unified them bu thtey stil call them leagues but they really aren't but they really are just not legally way over my head somebody must explain

league, conference...they're just labels
you understand the essence of the AL and NL...that's what is important

the NL and AL were for a very long time seperate entities: different league offices, different rules, different umpires; both were under the umbrella of the MLB
in the past ten years or so, they have done away with most of that, though
but it doesn't really matter either way, you're just a stupid alias 5/23/2007 10:25:54 PM |

another challenge: if they merged in 2000. shouldnt the world series have ceased at that point. isn't it now just the mlb championship series? or mlbcs. just since 2000 i mean. hopefully no question will be left unanswered after this thread.
[Edited on May 23, 2007 at 10:35 PM. Reason : also they had 1 draft and 1 lockout (the other leagued iddnt keep playing during l.o.) pre 2000] 5/23/2007 10:34:03 PM |

there has never been a lockout in MLB, there were three strikes
strikes come from the player's union, lockouts from owners
they have nothing to do with the NL/AL distinction

Not a good thread, it's a po-ta-to vs po-tato argument league n. Sports. An association of teams or clubs that compete chiefly among themselves. conĀ·ferĀ·ence n. Sports. An association of teams.
Ironic how the AL has the only non-US team

Not really ironic
NL - National Leauge - all the teams are in one nation
AL - American Leauge - Canada is part of North America
[Edited on May 24, 2007 at 12:50 AM. Reason : I know that's not why they are called that, pointing out it's not ironic] 5/24/2007 12:49:04 AM |

the NL is actually a Division and the AL is a legion...MLB is technically a Kingdom whereas the NFL is more similar to a Conference 5/24/2007 10:33:57 AM |
