does this even matter anymore?

i'm thinking it's just a holdover from the old days of 256 color monitors but if anyone knows if it's still relevant please enlighten me

You are correct. It's from when everybody didn't have 32bit color. It shouldn't be an issue.

actually, yes it still matters. don't ask me WHY, but there is still a difference between an a color within an image, and a HEX specified color on the web, even if they are verified to be the same.

Try it with some obscure shades, you'll quickly see the problem.

might also be relevant if you're expecting a wide array of device types accessing the page

pda's phones, various other handhelds

but probably not

the overall answer to this i think is that it still matters in some special cases, but it's not nearly the concern it once was
