Just picked one of these up. I never jumped on the dd-wrt or alchemy bandwagon a couple years ago but now i wouldn't mind testing it out. Mainly because trying to separate my connection from my roomate's with m0n0wall/pfSense is getting on my nerves.

Is this newer model still capable of being flashed and what is currently the most popular method and firmware hack?

I don't know when that was updated.

I'd pay the 20/yr for sveasoft's alchemy/talisman if i knew the v8 could be flashed. they went back to the broadcomm chip but i don't know if there is some fail safe to prevent flashing with 3rd party? Why wait this long to do it, if so.

Hell, as much as those things cost new these days, you're probably better off to take it back, and look on eBay for a v.2 or so. Even A v.5 works decent, and those can still be had in a lot of places.

I love my v.2 though - tons of memory, so I can run the full version of anything!

bump that...the buffalo whr-g54s goes on sale for $25 AR monthly at circuit city...run that with tomato and you've got a better piece of equipment than any comparable linksys...it's completely flashable with dd-wrt if you insist on it

nope, to give my roomates wireless access while keeping them completely off my network.

Not trying to get raped by spyware/adware from all their pr0n.

The box i'm using pfSense on http://www.pfsense.com is quite bulky and gets in the way, so if i find a good enough firmware, or hell even a router that i could flash pfsense onto i'd just dump this p3 600mhz.

I can sometimes get crazy with how i set up a network and probably double nat a lot and fuck things up but this is currently how i got everything (somewhat) to work.

cable modem ~> pfSense WAN port

pfSense LAN port 192.168.1.xx(Normally you throw this in a switch and be done) ~> My computer

pfSense OPT port 10.11.12.1 ~> WRT54G WAN 10.11.12.13

WRT54g LAN 10.10.10.x giving out DHCP addresses.

I have an allow-all rule source any destination 10.11.12.x and a block all from the WRTnet to me.

I'm sure i overcomplicated a simple network topology. I just suck at setting them up to be exactly how i want sometimes.

Any advice, flaming, or criticism would be welcomed.

pfSense is built on freebsd.

I'd rather have the wireless+switch.

you don't have to have a WRT54G for dd-wrt

there are, in fact, better routers to buy for dd-wrt, check the compatibility list

I'll back up quagmire. I just got that Buffalo router for $25 new from CC about a month ago and i flashed it with tomato. It works better than my Linksys WRT54G v4 did.

the WRT54GL is the way to go if you have to get linksys.

knowing what i know now, i'd get the Buffalo. much cheaper.

Doesn't look like it is as flexible, but I guess it depends on what you use it for.
