This weekend my cat of 12 years had to be put down. Last year this time I got a kitten (now he is a little over one year) and so all his life he has had another cat there with him. Is it possible that Kyle (the one year old) wants to have another cat around or do you think he cares less if he has someone else there? I want to get another cat at some point, but I'm not sure if it is too soon for me to get another one since mine did just die. Any advice?

animals can definitely get depressed when other animals in the house have passed. don't get one right away to fill the void though.

I wouldn't wait too long before you get another one, and I would get another kitten. If Kyle is used to having another kitty around, its probably best to go ahead and do it.

he just lost a friend. animals will react differently to this loss, but I have seen a dog be depressed after his best friend (another dog) died. I think what kept him more upbeat was the fact that he was never alone during this time. If you can't spend time with this kitten, then yeah, get another one. But if you can devote a lot of time and attention to him, he should be fine.

I am sorry your cat had to be put down. As far as getting another kitten, does your 1 yr old enjoy other cats? Some cats are perfectly content on being by themselves. They aren't as social as dogs but I think most enjoy companionship whether it be human, cat, or even a dog. So if your cat does enjoy other cats, ask yourself if YOU are ready for another cat. Of course you will not be replacing the one that just died but getting another one. Some people are quicker to get another animal after they have one to die and some people are slower. No one can tell you if you are ready, it is up to you. I hope that when/if you decide to get another cat, you look at rescues or shelters. There are many many many to choose from.

Again, I am very sorry about the 12 yr old. It is never easy to loose an animal.

Yeah the one that got put down was the one that has long fur.

Kyle (the Miller Lite box cat) is very social and enjoys people, dogs, and other cats. My thoughts are that since he is such an active cat that they can play together and he won't be such a crazy wild cat like he typically is now, except when he is sleeping. And I volunteer at the SPCA now so I would definately get one from there since they are already fixed when you get them. It actually is a better deal that way, rather than getting a kitten and getting it fixed with all their shots.
