i poured too much oil in my honda accord and am trying to get an idea of whether or not that's a big problem.

basic info about the car, it's a 1990 accord with 270k miles on it, and it has always been an oil hog (since i've owned it) and i've had to refill it frequently. knowing how quickly it burns through the oil i overcompensated a little bit and now it's got too much.

at what point does it become a problem, or does it? to give some kind of reference to how much i'm talking here, all i added was a little over 1 quart. 1.5 quarts at the max. I basically have to add a quart or so every month to keep it at the top fill line anyway, and it's been about 2 weeks since the last time i'd done that.

i can't really guage how much too full it is in quarts, but knowing that that it definitely wasn't any higher than the fill line before i added anything would another quart be catastrophic? i know that once it gets to the dipstick the line goes up really fast but just looking at the line it looks way full. i'd say it's probably a good inch or more above the line it should be at.

so bottom line, is this something really serious to the point where i shouldn't drive it, or is it not a huge deal? i'd be a little more concerned if it were in a newer car that didn't burn through oil so fast.

any thoughts? thanks.

it'll just burn it a little faster till it gets down to the normal level, usually between the add to fill mark is 1 quart, so you can figure out about how overfull it is by that distance

just drain it all and start over! 4.5 quarts of oil (and a new filter for good measure) are way cheaper than getting that engine replaced!

I'm pretty sure that one time when someone changed my oil, they didn't drain the old oil out before adding new oil. Because when my oil pump seal blew out 5 miles down the road the oil was BLACK not amber, or brownish but straight black and a lot of it.

sometimes a car that is way overdue for an oil change no longer has oil in it at all but some kind of tarlike black dye, and even when you drain it all out and refill with fresh clean oil it only takes a second to dirty it up.

i've had more than one with nothing left to drain out, and it was still running ok, enough sludge on everything to lubricate it i guess

i'm gonna market some sludge motor oil, 100k oil changes

haha i am runnin 20-50. i didnt always go that thick, but as much as i was having to add it became clear that that was the way to go.

as far as how high it is on the dipstick... i would say it looked a little over an inch past the line. it might be a bit more, but not much.

i realize it can be drained. i just wanted to find out if i definitely need to do that before driving it or if it should be ok. i've already driven it a bit anyway. without getting way too into detail, the car had sputtered a bit when i was driving it (this is before the overfill) so i stopped at a gas station. it was runnin really hot, although the temp guage was right around the middle, but i mean there was steam coming out when i took the oil cap off. i didnt have a really long time to sit there and wait, but i waited several minutes for it to cool down some before checking the oil level, but even then it wasnt settled enough to give an accurate read. knowing how bad my car is about eating up oil i figured it must have been pretty low and that maybe it had caused the car to sputter a bit so i went ahead and added a little over a quart. after doing that i drove to a couple of places for some errands/groceries and came back to the apartment. went back to double check the stick today after it'd been sitting and that's when i saw how high it was. also i should mention that the car isn't completely level where it's sitting right now, and the end opposite of the dipstick is a little higher so that's making the line look a bit higher than it really is, but it's still got too much oil.

so i guess what i need to find out is do i definitely need to drain it, or is it ok? and if i do need to drain it, is it really bad to drive it even a little? i don't have the capability of getting underneath to drain the oil at my apartment, but i can do it if i drive it to a friend's. (can't be brought here, basically just using a conveniently placed curb to get the front end elevated and secured so you can get under it). is it so bad that i shouldn't even drive it over there to drain it?

--it's not way overdue for a change, it was just changed not all that long ago (1-2months). it still just goes through it really fast so i have to keep checking it and adding it every so often. it's not the tarlike stuff. it's all oil that's in there.

can you sort of explain that a little more? what led you to that thought, and how can i tell if that's the case?

i don't really know that it would be that though, i mean i physically poured oil into the thing. i'm not saying i just randomly checked it and it was too full. i poured it in thinking it must be real low for it to be running like it was, and i couldnt wait any longer for it to settle for a better measurement.

i think it's probably ok.

i mean i did drive it after filling it, and didn't have any problems. i figure if it was definitely too much oil then it probably would have fucked something up then, wouldn't it?

1. You get a box
2. Cut a hole in the box
3. Put your dick in the box

If you just want to take a little oil out,
You've got 3 options
1. remove your filter, drain it, put it back on, or the more messy way,
2. remove drain plug, let a little out, put drain plug back in.
3. Do an oil change but not the filter and you're out $9 worth of oil

We have a winner here. How far away is the friend's house you'd need to drive it to? Is he 20 miles away? If it's just a few miles, I personally think you'd be ok just to drive it over there to do the oil change. But then again I'm no expert.

it's fine. called up to where i get it serviced and they said it wasn't a big deal. said they regularly overfill by about a quart on cars with higher mileage that are known to go through oil quickly. also, he said if it was indeed too much it would have just made it smoke, and that if it hadn't already been doing that in the time i've driven it then it's fine.

thanks for the info

its a worn out accord thats more than 25% overfilled, thats not going to help any. not to mention itll probably make the oil leak worse.

windage will churn the oil into a bubble froth so that air bubbles get sent to the bearings instead of oil...

depending on how overfilled it is, of course.
