It seems like a year or two ago every bar in Raleigh was doing poker tavern tour or something similar, and now either bars don't advertise that they still do it or they have just plain stopped. I kinda enjoyed going out to a bar for an hour or so drinking beer, playing poker, and meeting people. What local bars still do it and when?

um, fox and hound (which is sort of a bar) does it on thursdays at 7 and 10. sometimes they change the night, but it's pretty consistent

Woodies has poker tables set up all the time for any players wishing to play.


Walked in on sunday afternoon and each table had one guy sitting at it, within 30 mins both tables were full.

I think that Play 2 Win (billards and cards maybe?) still might. In the empty shopping center at Tryon and S. Saunders St/S. Wilmington... whatever it's called there. Know a few people that work up there but none of the details really. Looks like a little whole-in-the-wall joint but you never know.

are these tavern poker things kindof lame? I remember playing at a bar back when I really didnt play that well, but now I think I would enjoy it a little more since I've improved. i dont give a shit about doing anything with standings or whatever, but I get the impression there might be a catch to these tavern events, like you have to pay money to participate... or do you not?

You don't have to pay money to participate in WTP, but it's encouraged that you buy drinks or something.

I prefer running my own game or going to other home games because I know the people and I think it's a lot more fun than playing with total strangers.

I occasionally run the game at Babineau's thru World Tavern Poker. It's a fun game. Friday 7 and 10. Saturday 4 and 8. Sunday 3 and 7.

world tavern is fine for a while if you're new to the game, but if you make any effort to learn about poker you'll quickly and vastly outgrow those games.
