"I love the soft ground here in North Carolina and I like to go off-roading. Do I need to register my ATV?

ATVs are usually made for off-road use. Even if you were to change the tires, it still would not be safe enough to use on the roads. Because they don't meet DOT safety standards, you cannot drive them on the road. Therefore, you do not need to register and title your ATV."

Do I need to register this type of vehicle?

Within North Carolina there are instances of vehicles that do not have to be registered, either for highway safety reasons or in some cases the vehicle may not even be registered with the DMV.
ATVs
Mobile Homes
Mopeds
Motorcycles
Trailers
Water Craft

ATVs:

return to top
All Terrain Vehicles (ATV) are usually manufactured for off road use. The vehicles generally do not meet the normal DOT safety standards. The manufacturers state that even if conforming tires were place on the motorcycle, that the suspensions and other design features are meant for low-pressure tires, so placing different tires on the vehicle does not allow it to meet safety standards.

A title or license cannot be issued unless an inspector's report is received confirming that the vehicle is equipped for road use and meets all DOT safety standards. "

if he sells the property, he is still expected to pay off the lien even if it is for less than what he owes, so once he sells it, it is your property, the bank cannot reposess it, they just go after hiim for the money, of course there are a very few circumstances such as if he gives the property to someone, and continues to use it, but usually not, its not the same as vehicles, or other things that are titled

the only thing you have to worry about is if it is stolen property, so just get the vin and call the police and get them to run it, they may give you some bullshit about going to the dmv

also what is this thing worth? here's all that is done to it:

'Its an 01, adult owned and ridden, low hours meticulously taken care of , Yamaha blue, shaved front fenders, new rear grab bar, blingstar nerf bars, factory 909 handlebars, dynojet stage 2 jet kit, white brothers mx4 full exhaust, armadillo full skid plates, custom blue frame…I think that’s all. Great fourwheeler never had any problems with it.'

I didn't get my bill of sale notorized, but I felt pretty confident that the guy was straight up. Do check the vin with the cops before you buy it though. You definately don't want to get stuck holding stolen property and this region has a huge number of ATV thefts.

how do you plan on moving that thing around? get another truck?

When I bought my rr I first had a bill of sale that I got notorized, but that was because we were waiting on the title from his bank after he paid of his loan with the money I gave him for it.

69 has given you the main thing... have the numbers run for it being stolen. other than that, it's up to you whether or not you have the bill of sale notarized. it's not a neccessity.

you don't get a title for an atv in nc, you get a certificate of origin. i'm assuming he's lost that. a bill of sale is an acceptable replacement, and a common way of transferring atv, pwc, and boat ownership.

didn't 01 raptors have problems w/ 2nd gear? most were fixed under recall but check it out. I would pay no more than $2000 for an 01

yea, i believe that is correct.. i was told on mine that the owner and his son were rebuilding the top end and never could get it to start after they put it back together so i figured he bent a vale or fucked up the cam timing or something... turns out the whole bottom end was fucking trashed because of the waterpump locking up and pieces of gears going everywhere, so i just said f it and bought the whole bottom end off a newer model so there wouldn't be anything to worry about

and it has aftermarket exhaust and jetkit, runs good.. high compression piston, stage II cam, etc.

easy as fuck.. remove exhaust, couple of wires to ignition sys and the motor mounts, unhook clutch/throttle cables and pretty much pick the bitch up out of the frame

The trader pubs seem to attract sellers who are looking for top dollar. I don't know how many of those actually "sell" versus how many just sit out there until the ad expires.

when you sell a house, you sign a lien affidavit saying there's no claims against you (this is signed in front of a notary). on your bill of sale, just have him sign something saying there's no claims of lien against it and if there are, he is responsible for paying them off and you assume to responsibility of any debt he has.

the sport ATV market around here doesn't typically support top dollar. there is NO WAY that an 01 raptor is worth anywhere near 3-4K. I saw the ad on craigslist you're talking about, and he is dreaming @ $4000. You'll never be able to get that back out of it, especially w/ cut fenders. Look at comparable models also. If you're looking for the fastest in a straight line, look at the bom ds650, they are cheap. It's bigger and heavier, but its faster/quicker and more stable at high speed.

I like 400ex's and 450r's. They aren't quite as fast, but are dead reliable. An 01 400ex can be had for 1800-2000, and a 450r maybe $750 more.

Also, sport ATV's are worth more right now than they are the rest of year, kinda like a jet ski.

Bottom line, that Raptor is a $2500 ATV. I'd pay $4000 for an 04 / 05

or, tell him trade+cash. sounds like a pretty fair trade to me though, i think you'd be hard pressed to sell your bike for much more than 2500 needing a motor/trans.
