The NFL is better than the NBA as a league/sport but the draft is way too fucking long

The NHL and MLB drafts are full of players you've never heard of since college baseball and hockey don't get nearly the coverage of college basketball

Also its only 2 rounds...60 total picks...every one is important

i agree, i like it a lot more plus the players are more recognizable too, despite the attempts of espn to cover every minute detail of the nfl draft

COMPLETELY disagree. this is the first good draft in a long time. mostly because of the new rule requiring kids to go to college at least one year. You would not have given a shit about durant or oden last year if they were drafted out of high school. The NBA has a great draft this year but the first round of the NBA draft is nowhere near as exciting as the first round of the NFL draft. To say the NFL draft is to long is fucking retarded. There are 13 guys on a bball squad. Of course it is shorter.

why do i get the feeling, despite the fact that this isn't arguable and only about the drafts, that this will turn into another NHL vs NBA debate

they always do

long time = ? the lebron, carmelo, wade, bosh, hinrich draft was only 4 years ago

and if "this is the first good draft in a long time" when is the last time the MLB or NHL had a good draft? The answer is never.

And who gives a shit about anything after the 2nd or 3rd round in the NFL Draft? To say its long is an understatement and its true

yeah i'll give you that. my bad. but every year the NFL draft is a huge deal. I did pay a good bit of attention when Lebron came in. But the NFL always has stars coming. A lot of it has to do with the fact that we see these guys play in college and can recognize the names. I just have to take everyones word that Yan Li Li or whatever is good.

you cant count being long. every other draft is longer than the NBA draft.

i agree that the NFL Draft always has players you know and is a big deal...but other than the first couple rounds its mostly players you DONT know, many of whom wont do more than play special teams for a couple seasons...and knowing the players is something the NBA Draft has in common with the NFL that the MLB and NHL drafts do not have

also i agree the 1 year mandatory college rule helps you know players, but there was only about a 5-6 year timeframe with an influx of high school players...at first you had the occasional player like Kobe and KG...then yes there were years with a bunch of high school players who werent up to Lebron's level of fame

and even though the NBA has an inherently shorter draft due to smaller team sizes, its still shorter and a 2 day football draft is way too long...my only real beef with the NFL draft is how long it is but that factors into my decision for whats the best draft overall...you have to count length of the draft

i mean this year in the NFL Draft the first round alone was NINE HOURS...waaaaaaaaaaay too long

The NFL draft isnt as exciting to me becasue there's too many unknown players... random OL's and DT's that you really haven't seen play much and you can only base your opinion on a few highlights and the scouting reports...

The NBA draft most of the players are somewhat known quantities... i mean if you follow college basketball at all you've seen Mike Conley or Josh McRoberts play multiple times

For you and I this is kind of a political debate. I'm this party, you're that party, we can say all we want but we both know we aren't going to change each others mind. I usually know who the NFL players are through the 4th round. But I put a pretty decent amount of effort in before the draft. In the NBA draft I dont really know some of the players in the first round. It's all relative. Saying the NBA draft is better because it's shorter is like saying a dick is better because it's shorter. Just because you didn't watch the later rounds doesn't mean you dont go back online and scan through every single pick. I have never done that for the second round of the NBA draft. At this point i'm just going to let some other people voice opinions.

thats cool but just keep in mind, i like the nfl better than the nba

but this is solely about drafts...i'm not attempting to disrespect or pump up any sport...just talking simply about the draft

and like rally said, how much do you really know about some big linemen? since basketball (and other sports) have players that play both offense and defense, and since its 5-on-5 and not 11-on-11, you naturally see the individual players more than football...in football you have your RBs and QBs and WRs and some defensive players who really stand out...your playmakers...in baskeball players stand out a little more as individuals, which to me would innately make the players more well known overall...course if you dont follow college basketball or college football you might only recognize a few names in each

BUT WHAT ABOUT THE MLS SUPERDRAFT!?!?!

College hockey coverage has next to nothing to do with the NHL draft, though, since most players don't go to college and the ones who do are out before they're juniors.

^yeah i guess so...MLB draft has some of those similarities...lots of high school players and foreign players (although the NBA draft always has some foreign players you've never heard of)

v no doubt i just wanted this specific discussion to get a little deeper than a few posts in the draft thread

Can't argue with the fact that the NBA draft is the best to watch as a fan

Rapid fire picks with the whole thing taking one night

Also thought I disagree with it in principle, you have to admit it helps the draft to have guys like Durant and Oden be known commodities instead of just seeing the same highlight loops of them dunking on 5'10" guys that we'd see if they were coming straight out of high school.

The NFL could be greatly improved by 2 things that are currently under consideration:

1. Shortening the time per pick in the first round to 10 minutes or less

In the NBA, each player individually is much more important to the team than any NFL player with the possible exception of the quarterback. They have months and months to scout the players; they should know who they want within minutes of their pick coming up.

2. Have the first round on Friday night.

This would highlight the top players even more and with a 10 minute pick limit could all be done in under 5 hours. Start it at 7 and wrap it up around midnight. Plus Chris Berman might have a few too many and swear on the air and get canned by ESPN.

It's not even close. Even though Jay Bilas messed it up last year by saying how athletic and long EVERY single player was, the fact that you have heard of the players and don't have to wait very long for the next pick makes this draft the best.

Plus, you get to see some pretty crazy suits too.

I would rather slit my throat than watch the NFL draft. That includes the ridiculous 2 months of hype it gets. The NBA draft is EASILY far better... plus they don't overhype it for half the year.

Plus it's usually the one time of year that Isiah Thomas looks like he might have a clue of how to be a GM. Then he does something stupid like trade away a lottery pick without protecting it.

I was working at the Target in Charlotte at Carolina Pavilion on South Blvd. when we drafted Haston

A few after the draft he came in and was looking at the CD's near where I was working in the electronics section

He tripped and knocked over a whole rack of Staind CD's and almost fell on his face

I knew from that point on that he would suck

I like the NFL better than the NBA (though I am an NBA fan), but the NBA draft is better by far. I follow football a lot, but even I don't know who most of the guys are past the 2nd or maybe 3rd round. But in basketball, other than the 10 or so foreign guys taken every year, I pretty much know most of the top 50 American college players (and I rarely follow college basketball until the last week in March). And prior to last year when they could select high school players, you always knew who the best high school players were. LeBron, Kobe, Garnett, just to name a few.

Going to the Hawks draft party tonight hahahah, I have slightly less than zero interest but its free, and there will be free beer and they are giving away some shit, and ESPN will be there, so if you see a random Tennessee bball jersey, thats me.

NFL is too slow/too long to sit there and watch. Few people are interested enough to watch MLB or NHL.

I'll go with NBA, especially now that the age minimum has reversed the trend of it being dominated by overseas/HS players.
