Okay so I am kinda job hunting right now.

I got a call for a job where I would work 6 days a week, which I have never done.

The details for the job are:

Hours: 12-8 Mon-Thurs. 11-7 Fri. 9-2 Sat.

This company has better benefits than the company I am w/ now. Incl: dental and vision.

It's also a HUGE company.

I also get 5 more days off then I do w/ the company I am w/ now (but I don't know if that matters since I will be working on Sat)

Pay is at least $10,000 more than I make now w/ weekly bonus opportunities.

Anyone ever done the 6 day a week thing? How much does it suck?

but I get $500 for each weekend day, so it's worth my while.


and i'm also a workaholic by nature, so maybe my opinion is pretty worthless here.

for a couple years i did a 4 10-hour day work week...the days were long but i would always have either Monday or Friday off

overall though, do what you think is best

No it's a management position for a home improvement company. Not like a store... but a company that comes out to your house. It's a top 15 home improvement company.

its pretty much the same thing as working 2 jobs.....which i do. i work one job 40 hours a week and then another anywhere from 5-15 hours a week.

i still think i have a weekend for the most part and most of the time when i work on the weekends, i dont have to go in until later in the afternoon

It sounds like you aren't analyzing everything here.
I assume your current job is 40 hours per week. This job is 45.
You're saying you can make more with bonuses - but what if you don't?

If you would be happy in this job working more days and more hours even if you didn't make those bonuses, then take it. Never, ever rely on a bonus or commission.

i would keep looking - i would probably get burnt out with only 1 day off - you get the extra days of vacation because probably b/c people need to take more days off after working 6 days all year - also since you are getting married that's something else to consider unless you can work from home....sounds like you'll never be home for dinner together and having a different work schedule from your spouse would suck i think

I guess the only advice that I can offer is to ask yourself some questions and then determine if it the new job works for you, and condider these questions as well....

Will I have to pay more for gas?
Are those hours set in stone? What if a customer is only available after 2:00 PM on Saturday?
What do I do on Saturday? Tailgate?
If you're a football fan the Thurs. night games are out. If you're a basketball fan, pretty much all the games are out.


I'd be most weary about whether or not this is a punch in at this time, punch out at this time job.

IE it sounds like some of the pay is commission based with weekly bonuses. You may have to work around your customer's schedule, not yours.

No I mean... I still would make significantly more w/ the base salary than I do now. The bonus part is just an added benefit.

Eh, I dunno. She gets off by 2 on Saturdays. Hell, I hardly ever do anything before 2 on Saturdays, so it'd just be a matter of me going to sleep before 5 AM the night before. I'd have to strongly consider it.

i work 7 days a week...close to 70 hours. .....depends on if you like your job i suppose. i dont mind it because i really enjoy it. but i must admit, the social life is a bit lacking.

Not to be a downer......but didn't you just start your current job less than a year ago? Not to mention you just got your paralegal thing and you are already looking for something different. Maybe you should give your job a little more time before rushing off to something else. Changing jobs often can become a red flag as to your level of commitment to the job and may hurt your chances.

In the same vein, I don't think most employers care about a short tenure, especially early in your career. However, several in a row would be a red flag. So don't make a change unless you think you'll be able to stick with it for a while.

About 6-day workweeks - not necessarily a bad thing but you do need to take vacation, you will absolutely get burned out. 12-8 was always a rough shift for me, but it's good if you have a social life. I worked an average of 65 - 70 hours/week at two jobs for 6 years, and then 55 - 60 at one job for 4, so I guess I am a little bit of a workaholic too.

You are going to get burned out. Furthermore, any company that thinks it is getting more by overworking employees is stupid as hell. I would be wary of such a company.

Employees who work too many hours naturally compensate by doing less work per hour. It's in the interest of well-managed companies to make sure their employees aren't overworking.

Well with my job, I am salaried but since I am a Field Engineer going around fixing stuff all over, I am on call every 3rd weekend, but I get overtime during that time... Some weeks are slow but some are busy as hell.... can't really predict it but my pay without any overtime is pretty good by itself. I never could do a job where it was mostly based off of commission... I would worry about if it was slow business day and you don't get paid...

My job every once in a while I work a long day... but then sometimes I work a slow day where most of the time I am just driving from place to place... So it kinda depends on the job and what you are doing.... 45 hours ain't that bad, but you can get burned out sometimes and plus you might not get paid the bonuses....

I'm a workohaulic by nature, and have never had weekends off - so it wouldn't bother me one little bit.

I would probably take the position unless you have kids.


Base pay is 10,000 more and your off by 2pm on saturdays. Plus possible extra bonus pay and not having to be at work early (well except Saturday).

There is a chance that not having two days off in a row will slowly drive you crazy. It happened to me. Be aware of this, take vacation, enjoy your raise.

I work 7 days a week. I work from about 7am-1pm then 3pm-8pm. It is great sometimes when we are catching bears but when things are slow it sucks big donkey balls. It is so hot here (south Florida) that the middle of the day is worthless to work in.

You are going to burn out. About once a month I ended up taking 3-4 days off in a row and doing nothing for the project. I am pretty much my own boss but you know when things have to get done and to get everything done I have to work 7 days a week.

Meh. When I was in the military, I consistently worked 6:30am to 5pm 7 days a week, had at least two duty days a week (on the ship for 24 hours) and every third weekend had Sat-Sun duty (onboard at 6:30am on Sat, finally left the ship at 5pm on Monday).

It sucked balls for personal life. Ended up just getting used to 5 hours of sleep a night just so I could have time to have fun at night after work.

There was just about zero time for a relationship.

Yours sounds less severe, but you should realize that it is going to have a significant impact on your personal life. If you are getting married, she better be understanding of the fact she's hardly going to see you.

You're correct.... A college degree is pretty much par for the course unless it's $8 retail kinda crap. And even there, People with degrees make a lot more money, and advance a lot quicker.
I personally think people get too many kicks and too much joy out of their title, or saying they work for some fancy-shmancy company.... I know people who have college degrees who work for WalMart & make a ton more than teachers do - but for some reason, a lot of people would prefer to say "I teach" (though obviously, teachers don't do it for the money).
People make comments to me for my job ALL the time, but I go to work happily every day, and never have a reason to complain as far as my own security and well-being is concerned. I have a very good life, and their comments are meaningless.
