i have a 6 speaker setup but when I use my fiber optic cable for dolby digital the back speakers aren't in use.

Is this normal?

the speakers are fine because when I leave fiber optic/dolby setup all the speakers are in use.

if its not normal what might my problem be?

entertainment?

What input is this? If this is from your computer and you have an Audigy Platinum card, those only output 2.1 over the otpical output. If you're playing music, you should only be hearing 2.1 anyways. You COULD upmix to 5.1 or 6.1 but that's generally a bad idea for music because it makes it sound like ass.

this is to the dvr box or xbox i figured out how to turn them on but now it says "opt 3/2/.1 Dolby D EX" or something like that instead of "dolby digital"

what do I want to do/want it to say to get the best sound i can get with an optical hookup in dolby using all my speakers surround sound?


ok i think i may have figured it out. i found a movie setting and now it says "dolby d+PLIIx"

sounds alot better, what does that mean?

I think that's an up-mix setting. If you like it then keep with it. Audiophiles will say upmixing sucks, but if you like it than fuck all that really.

Your back speakers aren't going to work all the time, because most of what you watch is only in stereo (not surround) sound anyway.

It's only when you're watching something HD or a movie that they'll work, and even then, you'll only hear sound from them when something in the background of the scene warrants it.

If you want to hear them going all the time, your receiver has a multi channel stereo setting, likely, that you'll want to use for non 5.1 sources.

The Xbox though should have sound coming out of it fairly regularly. Make sure on your Xbox and DVR the sound output is set to the 5.1 option.
