Quote : | "Raleigh, N.C. - Former NC State men's basketball player Engin Atsür joined the professional ranks over the weekend, signing his first professional contract with Benetton Treviso, an Italian ULEB Cup club located in Treviso, Italy. Atsür inked a three-year deal, and will join the squad for its Summer League.
Bennetton Treviso is one of the most storied teams in the league. Founded in 1954, they won both the 2006 Italian SuperCup and the 2007 Italian National Cup. The squad won its first Italian League title in 1992, thanks to the arrival of newcomer Toni Kukoc.
During his NC State career, Atsur started all but five games that he has played in - his 107 games started is the fourth-highest total in school history. He saw 3,594 minutes of action in his career, the seventh-highest mark ever for a Wolfpack player. Atsür Became the 39th player in school history to reach the 1,000-point plateau for his career when he scored 14 at Virginia Tech on Jan. 31 this season, and finished with 1,100 points for his career, 34th in the NC State record books. He also ranks third in school history in career three-pointers with 211, just seven shy of second place, his 547 attempts also ranks third.

How much do you get for a three year contract in the Italian League?
Probably like 50,000 Lira and a season pass to the Vatican. 7/2/2007 6:59:34 PM |

You might be surprised how well guys can do in Italy. They aren't paid as well as the Spanish and Greek league, but many guys do well for themselves. 7/2/2007 7:42:24 PM |

This is even worse than the CBA. There is nothing to celebrate here. Highschool players in America get more fan far than this. I suppose it could be way worse though, he could be in the NBADL. But who am I to talk. THE U doesnt have many players in the minor league ranks, if at all. 7/5/2007 3:16:50 AM |

Man, it must suck to be him. 7/5/2007 8:03:45 AM |

Yeah, why would a European player want to make more money in a better league in Italy, when he could stick around and play CBA ball for douches like you? 7/5/2007 8:18:57 AM |

5x^ I think that is a really ignorant statement. Benetton treviso has been one of the most respected clubs in European (and world) basketball. Plus I am sure he is making decent money (probably more than if he were to play in NBA). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pallacanestro_Treviso It may not sound prestigious for you guys for a basketball player to play in Italy, however it actually is for the world-basketball fans. Do not forget that basketball is still played in other places than US, so comparing the rather inferior domestic CBA or NBADL to elite leagues in the world is not right. 7/5/2007 11:32:56 AM |

^Word. There was an article about Tyus Edney (UCLA PG) not long ago and he said he would never leave Italy. Him and his family are treated as celebrities and has the privilege of raising his kids in an awesome area.
You can't compare living and playing in Italy to living and playing in Albany or fucking Butte, Montana. 7/5/2007 11:49:30 AM |

Plus European basketball has gotten better by leaps and bounds. European teams used to play NBA teams in exhibitions and get beat by 40 points. Now they sometimes win those games. 7/5/2007 1:06:21 PM |

I know I would rather play in Europe than in the NBA, it's safer 7/5/2007 10:53:42 PM |

I doubt that.
Have you seen the riots the fans throw at european basketball games?
