The Democratic Party of Virginia is looking for volunteers in the Danville area who would be willing to offer office help, go door to door promoting the candidate, or making phone calls a few nights a week. Our candidate is running for the House of Delegates which in VA is the equivalent of the North Carolina General Assembly. Virginia has statewide elections in odd years so this would be a good job for those looking to work on a 2008 NC campaign or those just looking to boost their resume before heading back to school. Although there is alot of developement going on in danville, for what reason I dont know. The town is slowing adjusting from basically unskilled labor to skilled labor, but its really struggling right now since alot of the people were laid off from the textile mills. The mindset of generations of mill workers will be hard to overcome, the population just doesnt value education...as of now.

It is a conservative area for sure, but as far as state politics go the line between some democrats and republicans isn't nearly as wide as it is in national politics we think we have a good chance based on going door to door like I've been doing. Regarding the phone calls; we mostly go door to door to get out the vote and promote the candidate, but some voters live so far apart in the sticks its not efficient to do this so we call them with the same message. Also, some phone calls would be for contacting people that are on our volunteer lists.

how is canvassing (door to door, or via phone) considered an internship?

i mean, im down with people doing that if they believe in the candidate, and want to work for their campaign ... but, other than personal fulfilment, what kind of tangible benefits is someone who puts a few hours in here and there going to get out this?

i mean, is canvassing for a politician a skill that translates into some more advanced job function? if someone came to me and said their work experience was "interning for a political candidate", i'd be like "well, what did you do?" and they said "went door to door and made phone calls getting out the message"... i think i'd kind of roll my eyes a bit.

^ I'm not trying to sell this as some career changing opportunity. However, it is another item to add to the resume and as with anything it shows commitment and adds possible references for you. Secondly, it does show that you have people skills whether over the phone or door to door which everyone cannot say they have.

And most people like to volunteer for causes they believe are good...you don't even mention your candidate's name, so how can anyone know what they are volunteering for and if its a worthy cause?

i think the debate here is not so much with the "volunteering" aspect... but more with the "internship" aspect.

at least, for me, i fail to see how what you have described can be considered an internship.

internships are career-path related... theres an understood payoff for the intern, whether its in salary or job experience.

Volunteering, on the other hand, is performed for personal satisfaction with no expectation of payment of any kind.

I would certainly want to know something about a candidate if i were going to "volunteer" on their campaign.

^IMO it is more volunteer work, but what I was told if you commit yourself to some sort of a regular schedule it can be counted as an internship. Also, I have received no PM's so I didn't know how serious to take some of your guy's responses because I was unsure if people were just playing devil's advocate (in normal TWW fashion) or if people were taking this thread seriously.

hes in Virginia. this board is north carolina. the NC counties you listed above, why should they care who gets elected to the Virginia state legislature? You need some compelling reason why anyone here would want to donate their valuable time and effort to work for the guy.

no one knows what he stands for or anything. you just finally just posted a bare link to his campaign website. i mean, could you be any less inspired or enthusiastic about your candidate?

you say internship, okay, fine. but the work described is basic campaign volunteering. phone calls, signs, fliers, door-to-door... this is not some rare experience. certainly one could do this same sort of volunteer work in a local NC campaign at the same exact level
