OK so I finally convinced the wife that boats are cool. Now I will endeavor into vehicles with no wheels!
So it seems as 69's old boat kicked the bucket so I've been in talks to snag it. Its a good old 19ft Bayliner Capri, the old Force 125 has probably had it.
Saturday I acquired a trailer from colter, sadly it just wont work for my needs, so today I literally yanked a decent unit from under a 19ft Glassport. Chained the boat to a tree and ta-daa I have a trailer. Needs a little work, nothing major, and I have to title it. Any insight into that process would be great.
NEXT to acquire an outboard. Already have leads on two nice possibilities. Im going for quickness here, trying to get this boat back to town, fixed and back in the water ASAP. So Ill keep yall posted.
New glassport trailer...
forgot photobucket changed their shit...
also i have already pulled the boards and stripped the carpet to replace it, need some glue for the tops i guess dont want staples scratching the boat...

i just redid our trailer this past weekend. rewired it, but new lights on it, replaced some bolts, and put new bunkers on it. As i'm sure you know theyre just 4x4"s (well yours arent i see). I just wrapped em in marine grade black carpet using some spray adhesive and i stapled the back side and ends. easy and looks good.
my boat will touch water this summer...

nice. you can get it titled as a home built easy enough. dmv inspector checks it out, you have to stamp/mig some numbers on it, title, profit.
you'll want to adjust the runners/rollers to fit your hull the first time you set it on there too. 7/9/2007 9:03:18 PM |

exactly, which is which i laugh at fuckers like you upside down in the median with a trailer on top of the truck when i drive by
sure you can drive careful and not have any problems, until someone pulls out in front of you or cuts you off, and you jackknife when you lock up the truck brakes and the trailer is shoving you down the road

State Width Height Max Total Length Max Trailer Length Trailer Braking System Requirements
NC 96" 13' 6" 60' 35' Required over 4000 lbs. GVW
Your boat weight is 2,900lbs, add a full tank of fuel and trailer weight, and you are pulling an illegal rig in NC.

yeah, no trailer brakes would not be a good idea. he's going to be borderline in the suspension/handling department too, especially with the lift/33's but it should be manageable.
a lot of people are lulled into a false sense of security towing stuff out of their league. it's not the normal driving, it's that one emergency stop/swerve that gets you. 7/12/2007 7:06:02 PM |

it's the STOP that gets you like BBR said. the biggest/baddest engine will not stop your truck and trailer. ask zxappeal about trailer brakes, hills, and my jeep on a trailer. we almost died. 7/12/2007 7:58:48 PM |

me and C had some crazy adventres in VA towing his camper FULL of parts from a '73 Rover... including a full turnaround in a FULL apartment complex lot in total downpour conditions... ill be happy to pull my boaty boat with brakezzz
and i plan on towing it with the wifes rover long distance, bigger better engine, electronic trans, stock height, BMW brakes, functional ABS, etc. 7/13/2007 12:35:20 AM |

if the boat hes getting is heavier than mine then he might as well forget the whole thing bc theres no way in hell hes gonna pull it on that single axle trailer anyways.
trailer brakes are way too much trouble to maintain, i know this boat will prolly never see saltwater but i know more people than not that end up disconnecting the brakes on the trailer. saltwater kills em (mine is used in saltwater several times a month). ive pulled this boat with my truck ( a 4cyl btw for all you folks that are saying big motors dont help you stop, which is obvious) 70 miles to the beach for over a year and have had to stop suddenly on several occasions. never even come close to jack knifing the trailer. he doesnt need trailer brakes on anything thats bein pulled on a single axle trailer.

don't know about what weight your boat is or what the GVW is on the trailer, but my 19' I/O is sitting on a single axle trailer with no brakes that is rated for 3500 lbs. it tows great, and never really had a problem stopping it with either trucks I've towed it with. You just have to drive a bit more defensive I guess. Now any bigger and i'll have a tandem axle trailer with brakes. It is surprising to me that NC has one of the higher weight limits for when a trailer needs brakes or not. 7/13/2007 12:42:17 PM |
optmusprimer All American 30318 Posts user info edit post |
the point here is that i snagged a decent brake equipped trailer on the cheap, then refurbed it on the cheap. yes i could have saved 100 or 150 bucks in the process and scrapped the brake system.... ???
no i dont need the brakes, but for what i have in them why not. 7/13/2007 12:50:34 PM |
shevais All American 1999 Posts user info edit post |
no i agree that brakes are better than no brakes, it just surprises me that NC has one of the highest weight limits on trailers that don't require brakes. I'd definitely say they're worth it, no tot mention the wear and tear they do save on the vehicle's braking system. So do you need em? prolly not. Is it worth a couple hundred bucks.... prolly so....
any pics of the boat yet? 7/13/2007 2:59:00 PM |

LED's? i wish I had demanded them on mine as I went through bulbs like mad for the first little bit, now that I unplug my lights before putting the trailer in the water the problem isn't as bad.

considering single wheel trailer axles can be rated as high as 7k lbs., your point there is invalid.
Quote : | "never even come close to jack knifing the trailer" |
it's not about jack knifing. it's about having the braking capacity in general. it's simple physics, your tacoma is going to take a HELL of a lot longer to get a 19ft. boat stopped than it would without it. what about repeated stops? make one good stop, and your brakes are going to fade all to hell until they cool off. then you're left with glazed pads/rotors too.
with trailer brakes, your stopping distance could be significantly cut down or even equal to what it is without a load. bottom line, my life and other people's on the road isn't worth saving a little time/money.
just curious, have you ever towed anything with trailer brakes? the difference is night and day. i can't imagine why anyone wouldn't want to use them.7/14/2007 6:35:41 PM |

We are thinking of adding another set of disc brakes to our rig. We have disc's on one axle but another set would be nice because our trailer is heavy. The only problem is that saltwater is not brake friendly. 7/15/2007 11:10:52 AM |
