Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Richard Gere, and Cate Blanchet(?) will be playing Bob Dylan among others... wonder how this is going to work.

Thank God someone is finally making a movie about a 60's solo artist.

^ Yeah, I mean, I agree to some extent. But it really seems they are taking a different angle here. I think Dylan's story needs to be out there, but you're right... it has been overdone.

well they're playing a character that's supposed to represent Dylan, not Dylan himself.

i think the multiple dylan portrayals is a great concept/idea, can't wait to see how it turns out.

Looks like Tobias from Arrested Development is in it. That's a positive. I don't get why the are supposed to "represent" Dylan when Cate Blanchet is dressed like him, mumbling like him, and acting like him.

At long last-- the actual trailer. It looks REALLY good-- particularly the scenes of Dylan floating in the air and the one of Dylan and Ginsberg dancing in the field. I still think this movie might be a train wreck, but I can't fucking WAIT to see it.

^ totally. I remember in the later episodes of Arrested Development when Tobias had the hair-plug fiasco thinking that he would make a great Allen Ginsberg

While I love Dylan's music, this just looks like idol worship.

well, Bob Dylan is my idol, so I suppose it makes sense to worship him

so is Galaxy getting this. I read where it is in Chapel Hill and when I was in Fayetteville today I saw a small theater playing it, but I'd rather not drive out that far.

Still haven't had a chance to see it. From what I've heard, it breaks down like this:

If you've followed Dylan for a long time and know his music really well, but more so his life, you should enjoy the movie.

If you are only a casual listener or are pretty unfamiliar with his music, you'll be pretty bored by the movie.

I know most of you will just think that's obvious, but I think plenty of people enjoyed Ray or Walk the Line and weren't that well versed with Ray Charles or Johnny Cash's lives or their music.

Cif82 walked out of it but screentest praised it, so as a Dylan fan I'll probably check it out sometime this week.

it's a bob-dylan-acid-dream-music-video.

the difference between Bob Dylan's and cash or charles' lives is that Dylan himself has always been way more of a mystery wrapped in a riddle inside an enigma. Who exactly is the born-again Christian Dylan? Who is the one who just showed up in New York in 1960 claiming to be Woody Guthrie? Cate Blanchett owns the role of Don't Look Back Dylan - so much more than just an impression. She actually looks fragile, which isn't the way I've always thought of 1965 Bob Dylan.

The choices made by Haynes in the movie are really clever ways of breaking down both the myth himself, the swirl such a figure created, and the nature of celebrity (which, isn't that what all these biographies are about?) ... and I think it stays away from being hero-worship

Also, the music rules. Jim James slays when he shows up in the Richard Gere story, and Malkmus singing the Blanchett stuff was awesome.
