He may be the pride of Aruba, but stay out of his way if you see him at a bar.

it's a fun place. definitely hit up the downtown area if you're into nightlife. i'd also reccomend renting a jeep or other 4wd and going along the road/trails on the undeveloped side of the island. lots of cool places/sights, beaches, etc. expect to spend a full day if you do that. 7/18/2007 2:38:17 PM |

i did this on accident, but i reccomend you taking a bus into the actual city, like deep into town. its pretty neat, shows how the locals live and all. 7/18/2007 2:42:03 PM |

diving there is actually pretty awsome. One of the few places, thats ive seen anyway, that coral hasn't been demolished. Tons of rainbow fish and the coral is very colorful
and there are lizards everywhere, in case you wern't told already 7/18/2007 4:41:06 PM |

cool. one place i found really neat: you'll come to what looks like a dead end on the main trail that meanders from the lighthouse down the island by the ocean. it ends into a parking lot at a little remote store/restaurant. just out of the parking lot, you'll see a less traveled trail. it's on your right entering the lot and on your left leaving. it's a bit of a challenge in a couple of spots, but it accesses one very cool beach in a cove.
you also can go to an area a bit further that leads down to some natural pools in the rocks which are neat also. that was probably my favorite parts of that section of the island.
definitely start out by the lighthouse first though, and go down the island that way. you'll pass a few beaches, nice arch/natural bridge formations, some ancient ruins, etc. there is one water crossing not too far from the lighthouse that looks intimidating, but it's no higher than your bumpers and has a solid bottom.7/19/2007 12:34:26 PM |

Glad to hear you'll be renting a Jeep. You won't be sorry. Like others have said, start at the lighthouse on the northernmost point of the island and work your way down the east coast.
If you find yourself down in San Nicholas, I enjoyed the pasapalo at Charlie's Bar.

Beers to try: Balashi (of course), Amstel Bright, and Polar Beer (a Venezuelan import, not my favorite though)
Have fun.

def go with the jeep, we did a backwards thing to what everybody here was talking about. We drove through town from the hotel row, then down towards baby beach. we then drove counterclockwise around the island, stopping at the natural pool and the natural bridge, it's cool you just drive where you want to in the eastern side. I also very very highly recommend El Gaucho's for dinner at least one of the nights. http://www.elgaucho-aruba.com/ We took the bus from hotel row into town whenever we wanted to go. It's way cheaper than a taxi. We're not into diving so I can't talk on that. But we also did the Kukoo Kunuku tour/bar hop. They pick you up and drop you off at your hotel, it was probably one of the most fun nights I had on the trip. The Tatoo party cruise is also pretty fun, they leave from the hotel area, and you cruise down the island, enjoy dinner and beverages and a party atmosphere. Was also a good time. Here's the info for that. http://www.kukookunuku.com/

some advice about the cubans.
they are pretty strict.
of course you can stow them in your check in and get away, but they do random checks.
my brother had a stash and so did i. luckily we took all of the wrappers off the cubans.
my brother got stopped and got his bag checked. and the guy who was checking was like "oh some cubans" and my bro told him they were fake and that he was already sad because he paid a lot and got jipped. the bag checker was telling him that there were a lot of fakes going around.
so you gotta be careful, if he would of had them in the case, or even with the wrapper on them, then we would be out a few grand.
i think the fine is/was $1000 per cigar 7/20/2007 11:44:45 AM |
