My roommate is a grad student at State and had to be rushed to WakeMed on Friday. She was swimming laps at the gym (she's a triathelete) and had a seizure. Her heart stopped and she stopped breathing. They used a defibrillator and resuscitated her. Currently she's in a coma and on a respirator due to lung damage. The brain scan was thankfully normal. Fortunately her parents were able to fly down to be with her. Deanna and her family really need everyone's thoughts and prayers right now, the doctors are unsure of what will happen, this was just such a freak thing.

The lifeguards and aquatic staff at the gym are top notch. The fact that they could resuscitate her at all (most attempts to resuscitate, despite what the movies show, are unsuccessful) and that she's currently alive is a testament to that fact.

I hope she will be ok. Please keep updated.

Sounds like she actually needs competent medical help.

shut up, asshole. she's obviously got that covered. there's only so much that can be done for people in comas. the rest is waiting, and luck.

...

I'm sorry to hear about your friend, Lutra. i hope she'll be okay. i'm sure her family really appreciates all your support.

Good luck to her, and good luck to you. I know this is hard on you and the family. Please keep us updated. WakeMed is a great facility, and the doctors and nurses there really do care about the patient and their family. That really does make a difference when you're going through something like this.

She's doing better right now, or at least she's not getting any worse. They operated on her legs today to get blood flow circulating.

Mmm, you mind pagan prayers?

Do they know what caused it?

I know Deanna...I got an e-mail about this yesterday but it didn't have many details. I had no idea how she ended up in the NICU except that it was a near-drowning. Wow...I can't believe they had to resuscitate her. GG NCSU lifeguards, when I heard near-drowning I thought maybe they had fallen down on the job but that's clearly not the case. I'm glad the brain scan was okay. I'll be praying for her and her family. Where are they staying and do they have everything they need?

There's a Technician article about this. Says she had to have a leg amputated.

^ That is really rough for a triathlete to lose her leg (assuming she'll wake from the coma and be fine). I'll say some prayers for her.
