Is purchasing a refurbished plasma or LCD HDTV a good or bad idea?

bad (assuming it comes with a short warranty...which they often do).

as long as it comes with the same warranty as new, then it's usually a safe purchase, or so i've heard

If the warranty sucks (90 days or something) run away. Run far away.

Having a 1 year warranty on a $500-2000 investment is pretty much minimum for peace of mind. Unless you like to gamble.
