My mom has decided she wants to road trip to Texas to see her sister and I get to tag along...which is okay with me. I've never been to Texas.

To make the road trip a little less boring, we want to stop along the way and check out some places.

We both like historic sites, oddities, and things that are inexpensive but fun. What should we see? Where should we drive through?

I don't remember seeing crap between NC and TX.

You'll be driving through Alabama and Mississipi.

I like the Grand Ole Opry -- maybe head west a little before you drop south?

I take that back then.

You can pass through Atlanta and close to New Orleans. You should be able to find something.

^neat. Thank you

Anything interesting at all? I plan on taking my work with me and getting a lot done but I can't handle 48 hours in the car with my mom without SOME activity.

Hey Cassie if you are coming through northern Alabama stop by and say hi if you are around Huntsville. The Space and Rocket Center here is pretty cool.

The only cool things on the way are Atlanta and the casinos on the Mississippi/Louisiana border.

That's it. I drive 40 to 20 down to mississippi every year.

Actually there are some cool little spots in downtown birmingham

most of these places people are listing are on a very indirect route...graceland???

in atlanta you have The World of Coke, CNN Center, Aquarium, etc. But not really cheap.

85 south of ATL is boring as all get out. When I was moving to San Diego, we did Raleigh to New Orleans in one day.

Yeah I'm not sure how much time you are planning on spending on the road but you guys are welcome to hang out at my place if you need a good rest stop or even if you want to crash for the night. I would be at work in the morning/afternoon but it wouldn't be a big deal if you wanted to take a nap or whatever while I'm gone. It is about a 9 hr drive from Raleigh to Huntsville.

If you drive straight through, no stops, its only about a 24 hour trip from Raleigh to Austin.

I am in Georgia....Today was a rollercoaster of hilarity and no less than 8 near death encounters with my mother driving through Atlanta.

We are headed to New Orleans tomorrow...We want to come back through the mountains on our way back..with a stop in Huntsville Alabama to see the awesome Darius/Wraith...and the Space and Rocket Museum.

Any tips for Nawlins? Any cool ghost walks?

yea, be careful. It's night and day there by neighborhood. A lot like detroit.

If you want to see destruction though, stop in Biloxi and Gulfport Mississippi on the way.

You can cut down to it on 55 from Jackson mississippi. It got hit much worse than new orleans and is still completely desolate in a lot places. Except for the brand new casinos of course.

so when i came back from texas i found that there were two ways. the southern way, going through atlanta and all that jazz (which it sounds like you are already doing) and the northern way where you go through tennessee (memphis, nashville, and knoxville). you should take the other way back, kinda like going in a circle!

memphis has it's spots. there's all the touristy crap that seems to entertain everyone. graceland, the pyramid, beale st, mississippi river (river boat tours), sun studios, etc. but it's not so great when whites are a minority and the majority think they are all part of three six. i've lived in memphis for two years now and I won't live outside of a gated community. st. jude is even gated and patrolled by armed security. travel in large groups at night and avoid dark allies.

there are a bunch of casinos in Mississippi/ lousiana

when i made the trip from nc to houston, we stopped at the casinos

it was not very impressive

other than that there was a bunch of nothin

there might be more if you take 40 and come around the top

^^Been to memphis, been down beale st. Never had a problem being white

There's definitely some major reverse racism in Memphis, I won't discount that. But it's not going to get you killed.

Yeah, I was pretty baffled at the extent of the damage here in New Orleans. It was much worse than I anticipated.

We had dinner here last night:
http://www.redfishgrill.com/
It was very good.

We're planning to travel around New Orleans today...anything we should hit?

Where should we avoid?

Thanks
