what custom options did you want that no one else would do?

and how much was that thing?

and why no winch or ramps on it?

custom options are the extended deck width, full deck vs. open center, and the drive over fenders.

price i'd rather not advertise, we'll call it somewhere between 5-6k. i got a pretty good deal, msrp+options was ~6300 or so.

it has ramps, they slide into a hidden compartment at the rear. if you look close, you can see the little door on the rear bumper.

i'm going to mount a winch on it. they wanted like 900 bucks for a 9k, screw that. i'm just going to buy a cheapo chicago electric from harbor freight or a smittybilt xr8. both are only about 300. i'll probably mount a toolbox on it to house the winch, battery, tire iron, bottle jack, and straps.

yeah, i've heard it's a royal pain to get a non commercial class A. none of the dmv idiots know there is such a thing. i'm just going to wing it for now, and take the fine if i get one.

i need to get the address changed on my license though, so i'll probably try whenever i do that. supposedly there is one guy at the office on avent ferry that knows what it is and the testing procedure.

you should take it to a drive through one of these days too.

Thats the way I feel about it, I highly doubt a leo will go through the trouble of checking the gross weight on my trailer if I get pulled over unless my load looks unsafe or too large.

and I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't like an inspection, windown tint, registration, etc where, if you get the problem corrected before your court date its dropped.

BTW, trailer looks great and will definately hold up with the all metal deck. I don't think its gonna make through the first trail at tellico though!

yea last time I was at the dmv they were fucking clueless about anything besides a cdl and the normal drivers license... i was hoping to pull some b.s. non commercial licensing for the ol bus but they said nothing existed that work for that..

i speak from experience, without the winch, the thing will be unuseable in the rain.

i think sams has the chicago electric for 298 or something- have installed a couple, even comes with a shitty little mini snatch block.

^^^well, the thing is the law is based on gvwr, not your load. that means you're supposed to have one for any trailer rated for 10k+ even if you're riding around empty.

yeah, i couldn't decide on a dovetail or no and whether or not to do the full deck. finally decided a full deck would be nice for working on anything on it, putting any other kind of cargo on it, etc. decided against a dovetail for clearance. i think i should still be able to get low cars on it like my vette, even if i have to use some 2x4's or something in addition to the ramps.

going across trail 1 (gravel road) at tellico will definitely be a no go, especially behind the bus. hell, even hanging dog rd. up to crawfords and the turn in will be a challenge. i've seen a huge diesel pusher rv w/ a dual car hauler in there before though, so i know it can be done.

^it'll be fine, the diamond plate gives enough traction. the ramps are angle iron, so no problem there. if it is that bad, i'll just get some of that tape stuff with a rough surface to put down (not sure what it's called) or mix a little sand into some paint and spray it.

yeah grip tape is great, but even it gets more slick when wet. but ill tell you, ive loaded 7 and 9 car trailers in the rain before and it was damn near impossible with anything but an AWD vehicle

also my buddy used to have a single car big tex with a full diamond plate deck, very similar to your design without the custom features, and when wet diamond plate gets slick as fuck. like trying to catch a midget in a baby oil factory.

yeah, i can definitely see it being a problem for some things.

i dunno, i've loaded a few cars in the wet with a guy i know that has a diamond plate deck and it's never been an issue. only time there was a problem was in the rain and the tires on the car were muddy from a parking lot. his has a pretty low deck height though, which helps.

i guess i'll find out how this one does soon enough. either way, it'll have a winch on it so no worries.

I wonder if the SuperDodge would pull something that size...

Aw hell, I know it would pull it, but my receiver is too far back behind my rear axle. Too much tongue weight, and I believe we'd go into jackknife mode.

BTW, I'm jealous, negro.

I was pulled once by the DMV cops for a 28' trailer. The weight came out to around 18k(truck and trailer). They didn't say anything about my class C drivers license, but the fine for insufficient weight on the commercial tags on the pickup was damn near a $grand. He told me straight out that my rig was perfectly safe, it was a just a tax issue.

Of course this was many years ago when there was such a thing as DMV officers. I doubt Highway Patrol gives a shit nowadays.

That's a nice piece of equipment though. Should be fun in traffic. Just let it fishtail a bit and I've always found the cars get right out of the way.

^^they are pretty serious about weighted tags still, and the shp has officers that mainly/only deal with dmv type infractions. i'm covered there though, i've got a 20k tag on my f350 and my bus is exempt.

^blah, wake forest/six forks doesn't scare me. i've pulled a wide ass pontoon boat w/ the dually down both to falls lake a lot. i know i won't be on the losing end if someone drifts into my lane.

yea they tried to fuck me when i was hauling 6 skids of shingles on a truck with the minimum weighted plate luckily the office wasn't a dick and actually weighed me to let me know what i needed to tell the dmv so i could pay taxes accordingly..he said the tickets would have been over a grand if he had given me them

yeah, they were giving warnings and weighing people for courtesy when the whole weighted tag program started. now you're pretty much guaranteed a ticket, it's no joke. they're really enforcing them.

trucks have to buy plates with certain weight ratings based on what you're going to be hauling/towing. you pay X amount of dollars to be allowed to haul X amount of lbs.

it's a new thing they started a couple of years ago, "supposed" to be a more accurate/efficient way of taxing you for how much wear and tear you put on the roads.

suv's, rv's, etc. are exempt.

definitely, if you're planning to haul/tow much of anything. i can't recall the exact limit of a "standard" tag, but do remember it's just barely enough to cover the vehicle weight of most trucks.

^yeah, i did. it needs a little pink jeep driving on the rainbow. or rover.

just found this on weighted tags:
Quote :
"Yearly Fee(s) in addition to regular fees:
Regular: License fee based on weight of truck plus heaviest load to be hauled. Rates are:

$.63 per hundred lbs for 7,000 lbs. to 9,000 lbs.

$.78 for 9,001 to 13,000 lbs.

$1.06 for 13,001 to 17,000 lbs.

and $.1.20 for 17,001 to 26,000 lbs."

i feel like weighted tags are really screwing people that tow trailers, and even further screwing people that tow registered vehicles on trailers. you already pay for your tags/taxes on a trailer, and on any registered vehicle you're towing on the trailer.

i got pulled in VA once going to pick up a car.. the trailer lights stopped working and i missed a weigh station. i had no idea i was supposed to be weighed... but it was an f350 powerstroke dually pulling a single-car enclosed trailer..

the cop got all sketchy when i told him i was going to pick up a car... "Is this YOUR car you're picking up..?"

^^technically/legally, yes if you're using a truck as the tow vehicle. that's truck as in pick up truck, like i said before suv's, vans, etc. are exempt.

also, if you haven't already commited to hertz, united rentals has nicer/newer trailers and they're cheaper. unless something has changed at hertz since the last time i rented one from there.
