I've actually watched some of his past couple games, cause I want to see the tying HR.

But yeah, he'll hit it once I stop watching.

Speaking of Pedro Gomez, I'd like to see his doppleganger Taylor Hicks fill in for him from time to time.

And I was correct, as I was out shooting pool. Maybe I can see the HR that passes Aaron.

MLB should get together and walk him every single time he comes up to bat.

I know it won't happen but wouldn't that be hilarious if he didn't even get the chance?

The pitcher he hit it off of was suspended once for steroid use as a minor leaguer.

I dont follow baseball at all but i can only imagine ruth didnt face NEAR the pitching competition modern guys do.

Its like old NFL players who claim 20 sacks in one game (before their was a tracking statistic).

and not to mention hitting homeruns takes focus and concentration which steroids reduce.

^^ Ruth played when the strike zone was the letters to the knees. I will argue that he infact had less to hit because the strike zone is much smaller today. Also, the balls and bats were not nearly consistant (like hitting a 90 core pro-v1 golf ball today as opposed to what Jack and the boys hit in the past decade)

When it comes down to it, Ruth was a legend and has some of the greatest statistical accomplishments of all-time.

You can make a great argument that Ruth was better than Bonds in historical context based on his era...

But it's asinine to think Bonds isn't the better baseball player.

That's like taking a world class sprinter from the 1930's and throwing him into the 100m race next Olympics. Not only could he not compete with modern day athletes, he probably couldn't qualify to participate in the event.

no they weren't

the original yankee stadium was larger than the current yankee stadium and at&t

the old stadium just had an incredibly short right porch (like 295 ft)

Fact: Before Babe Ruth came on the scene, the home run record was 27 in a single season.
From wikipedia:

Quote :
"Ruth hit 54 home runs and batted .376 in 1920, his first year with the Yankees. His .849 slugging average was a Major League record until 2001, when it was broken by Barry Bonds. Aside from the Yankees, only the Philadelphia Phillies managed to hit more as a team than Ruth did as an individual, slugging 64 in hitter-friendly Baker Bowl.

In 1921, Ruth had an even better year, arguably the best of his career, hitting 59 home runs, batting .379 and slugging .847 while leading the Yankees to their first league championship. On July 18, 1921, Babe Ruth hit career home run 139, breaking Roger Connor's record of 138 during only the 8th year of a 22 year career.

In the 1920's, Ruth became synonymous with the home run, in part because he led the transformation of baseball strategy from the "inside game" to the "power game", and in part because of the way he hit them. His ability not only to hit many home runs, but to hit a significant number of them in the 450–500 foot range (and farther), resulted in the lasting adjective "Ruthian" to describe any long home run hit by any player. Probably his deepest hit in official game play (and probably the longest home run by any player), occurred on July 18, at Detroit's Navin Field, in which he hit one to straightaway center, over the wall of the then-single-deck bleachers, and in the intersection, some 575 feet from home plate.

As impressive as Ruth's 1921 numbers were, they could have been more so under modern conditions. Bill Jenkinson's 2006 book, The Year Babe Ruth Hit 104 Home Runs, is a detailed examination of each of Ruth's 714 career home runs, plus several hundred long inside-the-park drives and "fair-foul" balls that would have been ruled fair after a 1931 rule change made balls that hit the foul poles home runs. The title comes from the stellar 1921 season, in which the author concludes that Ruth would have been credited with 104 home runs, if modern rules and field dimensions were in place.

yea but that is basically ignoring all the resources that are available to players today, through weight training, money, supplements, etc

you really just can't compare the eras except by comparing them to their peers

So the game on ESPN2 is blacked out because we are in a Nationals market. The game is on MASN. Of course, TWC doesnt carry MASN. So assuming he breaks it tonight, no one on this end of the state will see it.

Not that I care about Bonds, but its still history, and gives me more reason to hate Time Warner.

New rule in MLB. What ever armor you wear at bat you should have to keep it on to run the bases. None of this bullshit that you wear protective gear then take it off when you get on base.

and small ball parks and amphetamines and natural pitchers. Who gives a shit? Ya'll act like Bonds is the only juicer in the sport, despite the fact that the majority of the pitchers he faces are jacked up on HGH and amphetamines. The entire playing field has been elevated up a notch since Aaron's day.

[Edited on August 7, 2007 at 11:32 AM. Reason : and Ruth did not "do it" on hot dogs and beer. He didn't get close to 755.]

Ruth was too busy pitching 20-win seasons and hitting 56 homers while 2nd place in the league hit 17

You cant compare players of different eras but Ruth dominated his era like nobody else

Ruth shouldn't even be in this discussion. If you want to argue the merits of Aaron vs. Bonds then go for it. Otherwise your argument is about as pointless as Cal Ripken Jr. vs Bonds or Ted Williams vs. Bonds.

you're right...how dare i even mention Ruth's name when talking about Bonds

but as far as Aaron vs Bonds...Bonds WILL NOT catch or pass Aaron's all time RBI record
