My computer has a virus and I think I need to have it cleaned out. I don't have a warranty and I bought it at ECU when I was going to school there so the only option that I can think of is to take it to best buy and pay too much money. Does anyone have advice for a better idea. Thanks.

Yes, clean it out yourself.

You go to NCSU, yes?

http://www.ncsu.edu/antivirus/

DL antivirus from there and install it. Make sure to uninstall any previous, non-working version of norton antivirus that you have installed first. Once installed, download the latest updates and have the program run a full test/virus scan.

Also, download spybot search & destroy and adaware. Google for both of those, it'll take you right to the websites where you can download the program (they're free). Run the updates for those programs and run a scan with them as well. Removing everything bad they find.

Also, it'd help if you told us what messages or windows are popping up that make you believe you have a virus.

Outside of taking it to best buy as well, you can use the recovery CDs/recovery boot thingy/recovery partition on your computer. If you tell us what type of computer you have (brand & Model) we should be able to figure out what your options are as far as reformatting your computer to stock.

1) start in safe mode
2) run a bunch of scanners
3) profit!
